Been getting into the folding @ home project at Stanford lately (Wiki info here). Running a little bit of the spare CPU cycles available on the 3 computers at home that run 24/7.

The way I have set them up they churn out work units for the folding project without making the machines run hot. Had to pull back on the CPU cores it uses per default though, made all the machines run with their fans on constantly.

Anyone else contributing to these kinds of projects? Would be interested in what else is out there, as well as where I can find discussions on the folding @ home project. Wondering if I can easily get the GPUs on my Mac computers to be a part of the "home farm" as well.

The Playstation3 comes with a folding@ome client which I think leveraged the GPU and Cell architecture of the PS3 ... I didn't run it much the PS3 is not the cheapest thing to leave running :-)

They stopped PS3 folding in 2012, which is a shame because it kicked arse. I used to run it on all my computers for a while, but lost interest. The project seems to be doing some good, but you never really hear it mentioned in the news.

I used to run it but since I live in a well insulated house having 200-600w heaters around isn't ideal in summer.

I once worked on a project in 2011 with one of my friends to water cool his PC with a car radiator and use that heat to warm a room while he was gaming or folding in winter. It was actually rather efficient (both at cooling his PC and warming a room).

Running SETI for about 12 years or so now. And a couple of medical ones. Run this on my HP Microserver at home.

my dad has run seti for about 15 years now and i have participated every now and then.

I dont run it any more due to the extra heat/noise/power it uses/creates. plus my pc is about 7 years old and graphics cars a little more than that so my RAC's are not that great.

Running SETI and a few other ones whenever my computer is on. Pretty old PC so cant run the bigger work units since they take ages to finish.

Time to find a new industry!
