Ok I am going to take this opportunity to 'big up' (I believe that is correct?) Wellington Beds.

I popped in there and got quote for a new bed to replace the one we have from there which is now 10 or 11 years old. That one is off to the spare room and we are having a new one.

One of their helpful salesmen looked up what we had bought before, recommended the current equivalent and gave me a price for it.

Having discussed with SWMBO, she also popped in under separate cover and tried that bed, agreeing it was fabulous.

I was authorised by the Minister of Finance to go ahead and order. This I did today via their factory.

An hour later I am called by the shop, asking me about the price. I cheerfully offer to email the paperwork they gave me.

Ah, they say, bit of an error there. To the tune of $1000.

Well, we'll have to honour it so we'll send you the formal paperwork this afternoon.

The very least I can do is to say that if you are considering a new bed and you live in the Wellington region, these guys make fabulous beds and are as straight up to deal with as you could wish for. So much so, that I will be buying beds from them, regardless of where in NZ I am living, until either I no longer need beds or they no longer make them.

Outstanding.

They are probably still making profit on that sale money-mouth

No doubt - but I am sure that they could have taken a different approach...

Or they know that the word will spread like this and they get a whole load of free and good publicity.

I think what flybys / Harvey Norman / JB HIFI should have done with their recent errors is say, OK we stuffed up, as you bought only one we will honour the price but for subsiquent units this is the corrected price.

I realise I forgot to add that the bed was already in the sale with 50% off BEFORE they made the error that they agreed to honour!

And good on them for that - more businesses should realise that offering more in terms of service, warranty etc than you have to is likely to benefit them.

I thought I'd let this go but it turns out I won't :-)

There's a HUGE difference between this instance (which they handled classily) and the widely publicised pricing mistakes recently with HN / Flybuys etc.

1) It was a one off mistake, not an advertised mistake. The damage was well contained

2) You had already made a decision to purchase... Interestingly you don't actually mention if the price you were quoted was obviously a mistake.. You say it was during a 50% sale off... SO say it was a $4000 bed, you would have expected to hear $2000... Did you actually pay $1000?

Cheers - N

Some beds have crazy prices, my partners sister works in a retail store and one of her customer bought a 16K bed! I didn't even know they made beds that expensive.

I think one reason some retailers can offer crazy discounts on them later, and people think they are getting a fantastic deal. While there will always be the odd person who will pay full price. Personally I am a fan of Design Mobel latex beds.

I often see beds at 50 % + discount at some retailers, as normal sales rotations, and they will still be making a healthy profit on that.

If they are making a healthy profit selling at 50% less, what do you term the profit they were making before the sale?

Extortionate?

But frankly, some people pay whatever is asked, so deserve to be fleeced as obviously:
