I've just started watching. It is a *triumph* of 80s Japanamation nostalgia!
Featuring New Zealand's own Rhys Darby with an accent that veers into Australian at times.
On Netflix NZ now.

Yeah I have the first two downloads. Parts of it were good, parts terrible, will see how the next few eps go.
I was like all excited till you said Rhys Darby.
That man, and anything with him in it needs to die a horrible firey death.

He is horrible in this as well. I think the casting staff are deaf.

Could well explain it. The accent has gone from English to Kiwi with some side passages via Australian. I'm totally enjoying the self-aware kitsch though. It's not aiming to win an Emmy.

Yeah there were some parts he spoke I enjoyed, as you say, self-aware stuff, but it probably fell a little short by about 45 minutes in. I'll watch a couple more and see what happens.
Don't have Netflix nor a clue who Voltron is, but would have a look if I could.

I watched it on the first day (a week ago - June 11) it was released on Netflix and binged all 11 episodes in one day! Funny as hell - enjoyed it. And umm.. yeah can't wait for season 2!!!

The character "Hunk" was doing my head in for the first half of the first episode, they just had him yelling/screaming all the time, but finally settled him down.
Rhys Darby's character is a major turn off for me at the moment, the original series character was a lot more serious and could see why he was in the position given to him by the king, Rhys Darbys version makes me think he was the court jester and just took up the post because noone else was around.

Loved it, and was always a huge fan of the original series. Apparently, though, they need to make toys. My eldest wants a toy of this new Voltron, to match the 30th Anniversary edition one. Hooray.
Edit: I agree on Coran, they've taken what was a serious/respect-worthy character and made him a failure of comic relief. Would almost prefer Jar Jar Binks *shudder*. Not to mention Darby's voice drives me batty. I hope they release an edited version with his lines replaced by something nicer sounding, like nails scratching a chalkboard or something.
I find Rhys Darby/Coran's voice is funny and totally enjoyed it!!!

My cousin had the original toys, was very cool :)
MASK, Voltron, Gi Joe, Transformers, He Man.... the toys of the 80's :D
Ive still got the original 1st Voltron episode on VHS somewhere, the cover is getting a bit tatty but tape still plays fine :) Might be time to throw it on TM ;)
