Say Something, I'm giving up on you.

Is the singer saying he has "already given up" and wants her to say something, or is he saying "if you don't say something, I'm going to give up on you"

The song sounds like the first, but doesn't seem any point if that's the case.

Secondly. Is this woman singing about a dog? No man I know does what she is suggesting.

According to Wiki -

"Say Something" is a slow-tempo indie pop piano ballad which talks about a breakup, where the lover is implored to make a statement that could potentially reverse plans, with the singers expressing humility, sadness and regret. In the single version with Christina Aguilera, she plays a ghost of the lover to whom the song is addressed as she traces the steps of the lead vocal.

Is it a metaphor song about Brexit?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Nah that's Adele's "Hello?" Song 🙈

"Hello from the other side
I must have called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I've tried
To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart
But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore"

I usually find genius.com the best place to find the answer to these sort of questions.

When I heard this song I took it as "I'm giving up on you - can you say something that would make me change my mind?"

What about Flume - Never Be Like You.

I'm only human can't you see
I made, I made a mistake
Please just look me in my face
Tell me everything's okay
Cause I got it
He’ll never be like you

Listening to that makes me want to gag - it seems like a joke, reminds me of a dog begging to be put down.

But it was hugely popular, so who's listening to lyrics anyway...

Much like/prefer this classic...

It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
