I ordered a gift for my nephew in UK via amazon.co.uk I put it on 1 day delivery. it went.

Today, just over a month later had over $150 disappear from my Visa Debit Card. That a bit of a bugger as I was trying to use that money to ensure I paid a bill on time.  It seems I am an amazon prime member and am being charged 79 pounds per month for the privilege of not being able to download videos in NZ, download music in Nz, get 1 day delivery and all the other privileges of prime amazon.

Short story - Delivery to the UK give you the option of 1 day delivery ( see figure 1 - number 1 below )

BUT notice a little note in Number 2 in figure 1 about a promotion applied ( not by me).

Click number 3 and you will see fig 2 below.

FIG 1

FIG 2

Note - you are implicitly signed up to 1 months prime membership trial with an auto roll over into a 79 pound per year subscription. Then they charge you.

As I have used my 1 month free prime trial (sic) I now have a button that says Sign up and Pay.

But again, on the first screen - I do have 1 day delivery option - but its only the learn more button that lets me down terribly letting me know there is a catch, and it aint on the bonnet.

On the day of the order - I didn't click the learn more - I just wanted to get the parcel sent.

Bye bye amazon.co.uk.

I tried the prime trial on amazon.com, and forgot about it so it renewed when I didn't want it to - I seem to recall cancelling it was very easy and I got a full refund within a couple of days. I think the whole cancellation process was fully automated.

FWIW you can sign into Amazon Prime supporting apps with the relevant account _If_ you also have something like unblock-us or another such service (which is another ~$10/month).

I use the Prime delivery options to get free delivery to YouShop for items that won't ship direct to NZ.

Regardless, that's a fair whack of cash for something that you likely don't need\want, pretty poor they don't make it more obvious.

What surprised me is they didn't apologise for the way they did this but actually supported it as if non-explicit sign up to paid services is a good and or legal thing.
