Phone scammers targeting USA were arrested in India. 70 arrests and 600 under questioning with more arrests expected:

Hopefully that will put a dent in the number of calls into New Zealand. Next time the Microsoft virus protection office calls I will tell them to google it ; ).

I'm glad about that as they cost a few elderly people I know $400 a piece but I guess this might just be the tip of the iceberg.

Yeah, I got so many I now no longer

a) Trust anyone on the phone with an Indian accent

b) no longer accept any business calls on my home number

c) Any international/unlisted number is picked up then hung up so there are charges made

The next thing that will happen will be :

"Hi, I am calling from Microsoft", "No, Those were scammers, thank goodness they were arrested, now we at Microsoft can REALLY get down to the business of helping you with your computer", "I just need your credit card number".

We had such a massive amount of these scams pop up (we probably saw 30-40 computers) come through from people who had been called, or called a "Microsoft Certified Technician" in India based on a popup on a website. We setup a few VoIP lines to jam up their capacity which would just autodial through to the numbers and play music when it was picked up. Watched quite a few of the scam numbers go offline after that....
