I have an elderly relative, who is fairly unwell and infirm.

Lately she has been having a problem with an unknown cat, which is pooing at least every other day right on top of her small back lawn, where she goes to hang her laundry on the line. It's also a bit odd - all the cats I know seemed to like covering the evidence in earth, not going on top of grass and leaving the evidence out in the open.

As well as being a tad unsanitary, this is causing her a bit of distress and annoyance.

I have tried the vaporub approach which some colleagues have suggested (rocks with Vicks Vaporub smeared on them, as apparently cats hate the smell) which hasn't worked.

Interested in anyone who has any tried ways of repelling cats that they know to work.

NB: She likes cast and so do I. So not interested in anything out of the Gareth Morgan playbook that could harm or kill whichever cat it is. Also, trapping could be a non-starter, as there are a lot of cats around - and presumably only one culprit.

Out of interest, are you sure it is not a dog, or has it been observed, and is it always in the same place.

I resorted to a solar powered electric fence unit and a 3 metre piece of aluminium angle with insulators and live / earth wires on it.

I put it on the top fence rail where the cat(s) enter / exit the property.

Any cat only does it once! Works well.

Does sound an odd thing for a cat to do, as it is normal for them to not do it on grass, and for them cover them up. Normallt they will go into the bushes as they don't like being seen. Also they don't tend to smell like dog ones do. I wonder if the cat is ill, or someone is chucking them onto the lawn from a litter box?

2 years ago I had problems with a cat spraying around our doors and man did it stink.  Tried all the cat repellents and other swear it works remedies to no avail.  From easytek I bought a scarecrow sprinkler and after a few times no problem.  The cats are still around but it is funny to watch them walk on top of fence to get past our place than go through even now.  Sprinkler was the only thing that worked

Sprinkler, solenoid and motion sensor.

And here's the instructions to assemble the above bit and pieces. Well worth a watch for those who haven't seen this before.

Sprinkle fish food (flakes) on the lawn. A cat won't poop where it's been eating (in this case, licking)

What did the pool ol bloke do wrong? Heck :P

I once had issues with a neighbors cat coming into my house and spraying and attacking my cat.
We didn't really have any repellent options as we also had a cat, So didn't want to repel our own cat.

It came down to making the cat not want to come back. Tried water guns but no luck.
I ended up locking it in the spare toilet for an hour and giving it the odd squirt with the water gun through the window. Worked a treat. Never saw the cat again. Probably the worst hour of the cats life but it definitely learnt the easy way.

Maybe something like that would work if you could get a hold of it.

Cheers

Can you talk to your neighbours?  If not there is always animal control.

We have had cats leaving their calling cards on our lawn, and in our flower beds. I know because I have seen them.

Our solution was to sprinkle Cayenne Pepper everywhere. - Not seen them since.
