Growing up our family was pretty poor and we used to eat a lot of what was called back then offal. So that is the sort of food such as and not limited to the following.

Lambs fry (liver), kidneys, sweetbread, tongue, brawn, etc. We used to have tripe as well but was never really a fan of it. On the menu some nights were pig trotters as well which were pretty good and you could knore(sp) on them hahaha

Anyway I used to love it growing up but if you were to go and buy any of the aforementioned now days it costs you a fortune.

Today I seen on a menu of a cafe we went to Lambs fry and Bacon. Well OMG it was fantastic in a deep rich sauce with Turkish bread and butter to go with it.

Did you have any of this sort of thing growing up and who here is also an offal eater ??.

I grew up on  farm where we killed our own meat.

Fortunately we had dogs to eat that stuff.

Really enjoy lambs fry and steak & kidney. Rich food and full of nutrients. It is still cheaper than steak mince.

When we came home from scholl the smell of boiling tripe would meet us at the driveway. We hated the smell and the taste. We, all of us children, never ate it. But my parents grew up during World War II so they had a taste for offal because they ate a lot of it back then.

As ethical vegans, we too honour the spirit of the vegetables by consuming all, the eyes of the potatoes, the skin of the pumpkin, the fingers of the chocolate, the ears of the corn.

Yep - lambs fry/liver and bacon, steak & kidney, deviled kidneys - love them. SWMBO doesn't though - so when she goes off to play bridge on Tuesday nights, I cook up a one-man's feast.

I gave identical memories to @Hammerer regarding the tripe - still makes me feel ill thinking about it and remembering that vile smell when mum was cooking it.

We used to get liver and bacon for lunch sometimes at boarding school; not bad for school food. Probably pig's liver, rather than calve's liver which is better IMV. We also used to get steak and kidney pudding sometimes too.

Tripe is a no for me. I'd rather just eat cereal instead!!

My late father was always a fan of the French peasant when it came to cookery, so was often to be found annoying my mother by polluting her kitchen with things she would rather feed to the labradors. He had a splendid charcuterie book which had a double page colour photo guide entitled "Boning The Calf's Head" that one of my brothers reserved for visiting vegetarians to look at..!

Our local bakery in Mairangi Bay village has won awards in the national pie competition and makes a fantastic steak and kidney pie.

The nearby bakery in the Windsor Park shops (top of Hastings Rd) also makes a great S&K pie with good proportion of K.

What, no swearing and cursing meat eaters?
On a serious note, I'd really like to hear why you're a vegan.

Tripe....Aaah...Love it!! even though I have seen it in the raw (before it is cleaned etc)

Tripe and onions with white sauce and chopped parsley.

Still have it occasionally today, though the tripe does not look as white as it used to.

I quite like haggis too.

Also lambs fry and bacon, and steak and kidney stew or in a pie.

Even fried sheep/lamb kidneys for breakfast.

Not a fan for brain or sweetbreads though

Tripe is quite green before it's bleached, I expect especially in NZ where cattle are mainly grass-fed.  It's soaked in peroxide to take the colour out of it.

I'm not sure why they bother - even if I had my eyes closed it'd still make me barf.
