We run our own exchange server - it has ESET NOD32 Mail security for exchange installed.

Seems to do an ok job on defusing malware, but recently the amount of SPAM/Malware has been increasing a bit and the Junk is starting to get a little annoying.

We have around 30 accounts (each has a couple of aliases)

I know there are various providers that will divert your mail through their mail scanning servers and screen/remove Infected items/SPAM before it gets to your exchange server. Some claim some rediculous effectiveness figures 99.99999% - some say something like 97% effective. Probably cant take any of those figures too seriously.

Anyone got any suggestions or stories on who/what they are using and how well it works?

For 30 users, surely couldn't get cheaper than moving to Exchange Online @ $6/user/month, if not Office 365

Alternative MS do Exchange Online Protection for $1.49/user/month

https://products.office.com/en-nz/exchange/exchange-email-security-spam-protection

Guess it would be similar to SMX, no idea about how that pricing compares to SMX

I didn't actually realise that MS could provide that service.

I agree exchange online is not bad, but we get educational pricing on MS products, so exchange is not expensive to us.

We use SMX in front of our exchange with around 150 individual user mailboxes and lots of shared mailboxes.  The service is quite good, we haven't had huge issues except for a bit of outbound email misclassified as spam recently and I think they had an issue with one of their IP addresses being blacklisted or something not long ago, don't quite remember.

Even better you'd be eligible for office 365 for free
https://products.office.com/en-nz/academic/compare-office-365-education-plans

Works especially well now NZ gets provisioned in Sydney too, those plans will let you do AD password sync etc

Highly recommend these guys: https://mxguarddog.com/

Only US$0.25 per email account per month and it works great.

So many extra options to tweak for blocking unwanted emails.

It is great at blocking spam and viruses, and hardly any legit emails get blocked.

Also acts as a holding service, if your Exchange server goes offline for whatever reason.  This service will hold emails for up to 7 days, giving you time to get your Exchange server back online.

It's certainly cheap enough. How many email accounts do you have?
Is there much delay in receiving email? They look to be offshore..

We've got about 50 email accounts in their system now.
No noticeable delays in mail delivery.
I like it better than SMX because the user's still get a quarantine email daily, so they can see if any legit emails have been blocked, and release them if required.
SMX don't do that, well they didn't when we used it a few years ago.

Do you find that much gets into quarantine?

While I understand the reasons for a quarantine, the best hope is that mostly nothing much ever ends up in there and the real rubbish just vanishes.

Everything blocked ends up in quarantine but you can set the level that you would like to be notified about.
