auckland uni are angry that a website is selling nz uni exam papers online

http://nz.news.yahoo.com/080328/3/4nrr.html

i don't know why these news organizations never put the url of the site with their story. it took me a while but i have found the website address. [URL drop removed]

this has been happening for years overseas so it is great to see it launched in new zealand and there is nothing illegal about it.

Apart from cheating, why do you think the University would be angry at them?

Agree with richgamer, fully support this initiative.  freitasm: don't think you can cheat under exam conditions anyway.  Also, the article reported exam scripts were for sale for $50 each, I just checked, it's actually $5.00!  For the horde! =D

And tomrig, what's your relationship with this "initiative", seeing your IP address is very close to the site's own registered information?

I am removing the link because it looks like a URL drop.

tomrig: ...  don't think you can cheat under exam conditions anyway.

So if it's not an exam it's ok to cheat on your books?

There's no other word for buying papers when you should be doing them. It is cheating.

erm...just found out about the site, don't know what you mean by the IP stuff? Of course people shouldn't cheat in whatever circumstances, but I don't think the discussion of cheating has any relevance here seeing that the exam scripts are from the previous years and people can't bring in anything under exam conditions.

We are not talking about exams. We are talking about paper that the student should be writing. This is just plagiarism, and plagiarism is just not right.

plagiarism: the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.

So, lying and pretending someone else's work is your own is not cheating?

yeah...students shouldn't and can't copy other people's work without clear acknowledgement, clearly immoral.  I know unis has turnitin.com to check for those stuff anyway.

I was under the impression that it was exam answers to essays?  Not uni papers.  I guess the rationale behind the anger from the Uni's is that they must now re-write all exams and find new questions and material every year.  It is one thing having the exam papers avaliable for everyone to read but another having an answer that scored over 85%!

I disagree with it personally, an undergraduate degree is easy enough to get without giving away model answers!

humm...I doubt the university repeats essay questions anyway, it's pretty easy for lecturers to test the same materials in different ways by wording the questions differently.

And afterall, what do students pay their fees for? Lazy professors who can't be stuffed changing assessments every year? Anyway, pointless arguing over this here.  For your interest, take a look at this: http://www.nzest.ac.nz/resources.html (national scholarship exams before NCEA came in).

What is upsetting the Uni is the fact that model answers are being supplied to possible questions (yes even re-wording) and they are not avaliable to everyone; only those who can afford to buy them!

interesting point...but what's the difference between this and paid tutoring?

personally, I find $5 pretty affordable, but that's beside the point...

Tutors teach you and help you learn the content, theories, etc....

exams + model answers only teach you how to answer the a specific or similar exam question.
