"John Key is resigning as Prime Minister of New Zealand. Key made the announcement at his weekly press conference this afternoon." Effective 12 December.

Thoughts? I didn't see that coming!

Makes sense with an upcoming election

Watching now... this line is interesting: "Key says he had no option but to resign immediately, won't be a "lame-duck leader""

He's right though - clean break is best. sh*t timing. Thanks 2016!!!

But why not see out your term, for a democratic transition to a new PM? Given how sudden this is, and that Key was recently indicated he would serve a 4th term if the party and public wanted him, I'd say something serious is the cause of this. Maybe someone at home is sick.

Main reason appears to be "It's time to pass the baton"

So nothing at all to do with Hayley Holt announcing she will run against him in his Helensville electorate for the Green Party. tongue-out

(EDIT: Just clarifying that I do not think that John Key's resignation has anything to do with Hayley Holt's announcement today.  Just thought it was an amusing coincidence)

It's not impossible to believe that his family forced the decision, and that doing it early enough to give his successor a chance to bed-in is the best plan for the party.

I am very shocked, but respect his decision. 8+ years is a long time in the top job and he has faced a lot of major things like EQ's which as Leader would be incredibly draining.

I suspect his family played a large role and if that's the case, then he has every right to put them first.

Sounds like he had enough (and his family more so).

Wonder who they will elect to replace him. A busy week for the National Party factions ahead.

Bill English has to be favorite but I wonder if Judith Collins will have the numbers....

It sounds like if he wasn't committed to a 4th term then its not really fair on his party or the public, when you get up in election year next year and say vote for me, knowing in the back of your mind that you are gonna leave.

It also makes the transition have a bit of time, so the new leader can run the campaign in election year.

He has been looking increasingly worn out lately and looked absolutely stuffed when he was filmed at the Kaikoura harbour with Brownlee.  Maybe the media coverage of Max Key's indiscretion was a factor too.
