Is it just me or are there tsunami warnings being issued every time there's an earthquake in the wider pacific region?

This morning there was an quake near Papua NG and, as usual, NZ issues a tsunami warning.

NZ had a warning in place for at least an hour, and it took 20 minutes (maybe) to issue a warning, after Australia said there was no risk (I'm still yet to see an actual warning in Oz).

Is this going to end up with a case "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"?

Are they just issuing warnings after every quake over 6?

Thoughts?

Only asking as my kids are about 400m from a beach and in a tsunami area (even though there was a warning and evacuation issued for their area after Kaikoura, they didn't even know).

Yep, it's totally "cry wolf" in NZ.  Issued for every earthquake and very slow to rescind compared to the US Pacific Tsunami centre.  If we ever get a real one, there will be loads of casualties because people are used to ignoring the warnings

the question is are the sirens going off? if they are then it might be a case of cry wolf

but then on the other side of the coin is what happens if there is no warning issued and there is a tsunami?

We had around 50 quakes in the last 24 hours, I recall just one alert.

Remember they are heads up not an evacuation. Remember these events are not just tsunami alerts but dangerous current and tidal changes that boat operators etc need to know about.

Better safe than sorry and really what affect does it have on your day?

I think they are worried that something BIG is overdue, and certainly some of the recent shocks around the pacific have been pretty big and in areas that could cause a tsunami of large magnitude for NZ.

They either ignore and get blamed when something comes our way, or warn and get accused of being trigger happy.

Don't know what you really expect to be honest.....

I'm talking the longer picture.  In coastal Auckland we've probably had 5-6 warnings pver the last few years and I have not seen a single abnormal wave or current in this area.  The only one I've ever seen was in Omaha Harbour after the Japan one in 2011, and that was interesting rather than hazardous.

The danger is if there ever is a dangerous one, it will be ignored

After Kaikoura, there was an evacuation order where my kids live, and the sirens didn't go off... after all, who wan't to wake up the drowning?

This is the stuff I'm talking about.

Even that order was uncalled for.

But anything over a 6 in the pacific region pretty much "automatically" gets a tsunami warning from civil defence... WHY?

But anything over a 5.5 in the pacific region automatically gets a tsunami warning from civil defence... WHY?

Please show evidence that is the case and also show evidence that no science is used?
