Ok, so I haven't eaten much Cadbury's of late since limiting sugar intake.

But, hey, it''s Christmas, and there's the obligatory gift of Roses from an obscure relative.

I ate two, and that's it. I'm now sworn off Cadbury for life.

I'm not sure if it's a consequence of being taken over by private equity (but I suspect that it is) but what a horrible cheap tasting sugary mess Cadbury have become. Indistinguishable now from the cheap and nasty brands you can get for next to nothing from the Warehouse. Eat a Cadbury, then try a decent chocolate, like a Lindt, for example, and there is no comparison.

Yuk.

Sad, they have killed the brand.

It went downhill once they decided to use Palm Oil a number of years ago. Lindt extra creamy is my personal favorite.

Since the palm oil incident, we've been a Whittaker's household, no intention of changing back, regardless of the price difference.

Mrs MDF came home on Friday with the exact same complaint about how disgusting Roses tasted. Another childhood favorite ruined!

Whittakers is my personal favourite, too. I don't foresee myself ever changing either. They've got that beautiful creamy flavour, which Cadbury just doesn't seem to be able to replicate.

Palm oil was removed soon after that debarcal some time ago. Largest issue has been since letting australia and England make the products. Not to mention lowering portion sizes while not the cost etc. When it was made here, it was done so for kiwis. Now we are struck with the same export market mix that the rest of the world enjoys better.

I was switched to countdown butget jetplanes. Changed to 'no artificial x' and now taste crud. Guess what Pascal has just done... Their party pack is also now rubbish.

I can't believe people like Lindt.

Whittakers, or if you want expensive try Haighs.

Lindt is nearly as bad as nestle.

Nestle do make some good chocolate though. The problem is they really struggle in the Aussie market against Cadbury so products like Double Blend that was a fantastic product couldn't actually compete on price with Cadbury so got dumped.

Cadbury is crap though. There is nothing nice about their product.

Cadbury changed 4 or more things: recipe/palm oil, production location, price/portion size, and packaging.

Then after the backlash reverted the palm oil move but didn't address the rest.

The rest is history for whittakers, what a total gift and they responded extremely well.

The thing is, they didn't just revert. Something has definitely changed. Cadbury never tasted this bad/cheap/sugary in the day.

Cadbury has never been a particularly excellent brand - they have always been a mundane, mediocre run of the mill every day kind of chocolate.

Lindt (not as good as it used to be but better than Cadbury!), Ritter Sport, Milka - even Guylian are all much better, with specialists like Godiva, Prestat, Charbonnel et Walker et al over them.

Here in NZ I would include Schoc and Whittakers in the list too.

The last best chocolate I had was Whitakers All Blacks Special edition. I wasn't expecting much when I tried it but I commented out loud how good it was.

I remember trying Cardbury's chocolate in Aussie back in 2008 and absolutely being disappointed.

Now, that's what we get.

Weeeeee!

What did it taste of? Sweat? Mud? Homo-eroticism?

Never tried double blend... But I've never been a fan of anything Nestle except Milo (half ice cold milk, half milo, not stirred, teaspoon and surface tension).

Luckily we get most of the good Whittakers here now so I'm happy. Haighs is a step up from that, but sooo expensive it's mental.
