Wait For Ambulance

I seriously cannot believe this?

He had to wait 55mins outside hospital for an ambulance....damn...

I am sure there is some rule or other than forbids hospital staff from attending an incident outside its doors, but where has our common sense and decency gone?

I bet if someone went to light up a ciggy it'd be "you're in a hospital" straight away.

I bet they wished they'd just found a trolley from the morgue to drag him in to the ED! I'm surprised ED has no stretcher or some other creative ways of doing it.

the story is on Stuff, before I have a thoughts on this I would like to see the story from a real news agency.

Well said. Stuff is sadly just click bait now with the NZ Herald not far behind.

I don't see any reason to doubt this account. They have quotes from key people. It's a good report.

I really think you must be spending too much time looking at the front page of both services. Try looking at the sections instead. There is a lot more focus there and it's easier to sort the chaff.

The front page is designed for clicks and advertising revenue. Imho be thankful for that and the poeple who use it.

That said, I agree with the sentiment of your comments if not the substance.

I've said before in different ways that both Stuff and the Herald need to look at some different to avoid this inaccurate perception.

Herald mobile text is not bad at it, but that's more of a happy coincidence than planning:

Assuming the gist of the story is true, and there is no reason to doubt that; the possibilities here are endless.

For example, doctors and nurses busy attending to emergencies within the ED, all of whom probably were not aware of the man outside, or had been advised the ambulance is on the way, so carried on saving lives. Meanwhile receptionist tried to call ambulance, hang up, call again, hang up, etc. Likely two groups of people doing two different things.

The alternative plotline is that yeah all the doctors and nurses were standing by the grand ED window watching the man lie on the tarmac. Which is possible, so let's see.

Hospitals run very lean these days. Take the risk of pulling one or two staff out of an ED for a comparative non-emergency and you may not have them where and when you need them.

Essentially the article says the ED front desk performed triage and decided not to do that in this case.

St John likely made a similar decision with their resources.

Could this go horribly wrong? Absolutely. Rarely, it actually does, and the services involved review the incident and modify their practice if required.

Front desk aside, I kind of doubt that any clinical floor staff were aware of the incident.

Was the front desk decision made dynamically on the basis of available resources? Probably not, more likely an established process to conserve staff and that's an interesting one.

What are the options?

At the end of the day, one has to accept that there are growing numbers of people that do not, or are not, allowed to make a judgement calls nowadays. In my day we used to call that common sense.

Like I said... Light up a ciggy... You'd be amazed how many people come running.

I don't smoke anymore, but when I took my dying cousin out from his room so he could have one at welly, and again at keneperu, you had all sorts of people rushing to tell him off. Not just security, but nurses too.

I skimmed the key points and I didn't think once "my god, this man needed care immediately!", not once.

Stuff is not news.
I propose a Peter Reader "Here we go" post whenever a Stuff link is posted.

So being immobile, in the middle of a car park obstructing traffic enough that a security guard had to direct it, and not being able to move is all good to you?

Do you drive over sleeping homeless too?

The point of the thread isn't how injured he was, it's how little anyone gives a toss about others anymore.

I'm guessing, by the fact the author is named in the article (EDIT: and is the emergency services reporter for the paper), that this was written for the Manawatu Standard, and just ended up on stuff like everything else.

Next you'll tell me you don't read your local newspaper until it's verified.

Plus, the fact that Mr Glubb replied and told their side, means it's verified.

Edit: The author of the article also covers defence and won Manawatu Journalist Of The Year.

Track record? Do you have a particular instance in mind?
