Looking for cheap Canon PGI-650 PGI-651 ink cartridges but everything on eBay that is generic doesn't seem to ship to NZ? Mostly Australian based rather than Asia based sellers.

Is there a reason for this? Are there issues with shipping ink internationally?

Yes there are issues because they can leak and ruin things. Its an item on many carriers lists.

I have bought fine on aliexpress before tho. Some places are less strict which is how they also can ship batteries that end up in the normal post system once here.

Any advice on cheap Canon generics? I looked at empty refillables on eBay plus ink but to be honest there seems to be a bit of false advertising? It says 100ml is equivalent to 15 refills when the filled carts are quoted as 12ml?

Nope, only canon I had was an effectively free MFC with the rebates they offer and its so terrible that when it stops working its getting binned rather than new ink.

The thing with ink is as soon as a cartridge is removed, they have to purge the air out which wastes heaps of ink. If you keep them full with refillables that you refill in the printer or a continuious ink system then no priming of the head happens, so its quite reasonable to expect that 100ml of ink would go as far as that many cartridges. Changing one cart over may purge all of them, or a group of them depending on the layout of the print heads, which is why the old wives tale of individual carts saving ink is actually BS. They have enough ink in the carts to cover more purges than the initial one to cover swapping others out, but the % doesnt decrease on the first few other unneeded purges.

I got a set of refillables for my epsons and 250ml bottles of pigment inks. Carry the printer to the bathroom to refill them since its easy to mess up and spill but otherwise its been going for ages doing quite acceptable photo and dvd prints. Just have to watch the tanks since the levels are always near full in the software since the chips self-reset to that when powercycled.

I know the newer ones have much nastier DRM on the carts which have been a problem but till my antique ones crap out will just keep using them.

Unfortunately shipping in most cases doubles the price. eBay were previously very good.

Worst about trademe now is all the foregn sellers on there. Ebay got ruined with the global shipping "We have no responsibility" crap shipping method and now trademe are letting people from the UK list tonnes of things with long shipping times at often higher prices than the same seller on ebay sells the same thing shipped to NZ.

How did eBay get ruined? There is that buyer protection right?

The global shipping is basically the seller sending things to ebays repackers, who repack and send on. If things go missing from the package then that is where it gets messy. Seller can prove they sent it out as they have stills of the cctv from their shipping (very well organized seller, dont have any reason to doubt them) and things didnt arrive in the replacement box.

global shipping stuff has no customer service I could get hold of. ebay are also no help. Had I known it was going to be opened and repacked I would have sent it to shipito instead who are competant and dont mistake vital parts for packaging materials and get rid of them.

The thing is that 'In Trade' seller according to trademes website says buyers are protected by the CGA and FTA.http://www.trademe.co.nz/help/786/in-trade-disclosure  These overseas sellers do usually have the intrade symbol next to their name, so aren't they covered by the FTA and CGA too, like any other retailer?

It is just a tickbox that sellers can tick. I expected it to mean something like a degree of profesionalism and quick response because it is actually a business, but many I have bought from that have it showing are just one person gararge operations that are slow to send and only answer emails when they are not at their day job. Not really what I would call in trade IMO.

Anyway, straying a bit far from ink recommendations now ;)

I gave up on ink jets. Too much trouble, too much cost for the catrtidges.

Laser printers might have a higher up front cost, but, over all aren't much dearer and so much better and more reliable.

So for the me a cheap ink jet cartridge is in reality a laser cartridge.
