Did anyone else get flying ant swarms last night in Wellington .... I'm in Thorndon and our houses this morning are covered with dead or dying bugs, or just their wings in large clumps.

I believe they are ants on the wing for their 'nuptial night flight'

For the last few days I've also had myriad cicadas dropping onto the deck and fence top ... seems they only live 2 or three weeks for mating, then ..... !! undecided

House flies! Can't leave a single window open! Must be hatching or mating season or something, I hardly had a fly all summer and yesterday they were blimmin everywhere! Was sucking them up all day with the vacuum. Friend says she has the same and she has no pets. Oh yes and she has ants too. So do we but a few aren't unusual for us because of the dog bowls.

We've had a couple of ant invasions in the last month. I seem to have stopped both of them but figure they're looking for a meeting area so will be putting a loaf of ant bait in various spots under and around the house fairly soon.

Wonder if they cue to go off all at once based on some environmental factor, or wether there's some kind of critical mass pheromone release when enough local colonies are ready to mate.
Also imagining popup ads "Local Colonies Ready to Mate with You!".

Flies have gone again. Good riddance. Got the windows wide and not one in sight.
