Having read this the GF has some questions of her own...

Here are the key points..

- driver under 25 and on learners, will have restricted in a few months
- Car is owned by her mother
- 1996 Nissan 105,000km approx worth of $4500

Does anyone have advice on the following...

- Insuring car under mother, with daughter as secondary driver?
- Who/how gives the lowest excess for under 25's
- what happens if someone crash's into you and you do not know who did it? Do you still pay an excess?

- any other advice on best cover? And what to look out for?

Thanks

It's always cheaper to go under your parents insurance while you're under 25, especially if it's added on to their insurance with whatever company they're with, lower premiums too. This is from mine and NR's experience at least... if I'm proved wrong I'll forgive you

That's why my car is 'owned' by mum, it costs her bugger all to insure, and I just pay her for it.

I'm with States insurance with premium coverage and satisfy your first key point. I have insured it under my name since car is registered to me.  The car is worth $6000, and pays $650 per year, excess is $1000.

It is definitely cheaper to insure it under your parent's insurance as a secondary driver; it should cost you around $200~$300 with States depending on type/security of car.

depends if the mother has no claims bonus.
i'm with AMI and no claims bonus is 60% off. they have the best policies and good payout record.
AMI is incredibly anal about engine size and turbo charging. you're hoping she has either a 1.8L bluebird or 1.5L primera.

then it'll cost her about $300 a year full insurance or $50 a year 3rd party with $3000 bonus cover (if you're hit by an uninsured person and you are not in the wrong this is how much you'd get - which is close to your car's value)

AMI excess is based on age, then licence. under 25 probably $750 for small engine car. $1000 for my giant 3.0L. she does not need to be named if it's a small engine car it just says "whoever under 25 driving the excess is xxx" if large engine she will NOT be insured unless the mother can get lucky and call (do not visit the branch) and get them to add on under 25 drivers.

Just be aware that there are some serious catches if you are under 25 and insure the vehicle in your parents name.

Firstly most companies allow this if you are a casual driver of the car. I know there are companies that will refuse claims if you are under 25 and are the main (or only) driver of a vehicle and it is insure in your parents name. The reason under 25's pay higher premiums is because they have high numbers of claims so it's seen as nothing more than a way of avoiding those high premiums. Before signing up for such a polity ensure that it is OK if you will be the main (or only) driver of said vehicle.

Secondly if you're in the 20-25 bracket then you may be better off signing up for a policy yourself because you then establish your own insurance record. While you may pay slightly more in the years before you turn 25 suddenly when you do turn 25 and want to insure a vehicle in your own name you have a record and if you've had no major incidents will probably be able to factor in a significant no claims discount whereas if you have no record you'll be paying the full policy price.

When I was younger the vehicle that I used was insured by my parents but I was registered as the 'nominated driver'. When I later went on to insure my own vehicle I'm pretty sure that I had a no claims bonus carried over.

The GF ended up going with AMI through her mum and has her own name on the policy as well.
We were told that once she became the primary driver - so over 50% of the driving was done by her, she would need to change the policy.

But for now, as the mum got a nill excess option, should anything happen, the excess will be $750.
This includes windscreen cover as well.

When she switches over to primary driver the premium will be around $1300 :S to start with but if no claims..following year down to about $900.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
