I have a Nokia ASHA dumb? phone as they seem to be called these days, as does SWMBO, basically a phone that is used as a phone and nothing else, so be aware i know very little about the functionality of smart phones (also i only make about 1 phone call a month, and a couple of text if that)

Anyway wifeys phone battery is only lasting 5 days (mines about 9 days), and she also needs to make closeup drawing/Art demo videos, we were offered a scuffed but working iPhone 4 for about $50 as a lot of the similar online videos shes seen have been filmed on iphones, but I prevaricated a bit too long and the phone went to someone else, not a problem as i would rather find a bit more out first, so here are a pile of questions

I kinda like the iPhone because although battery life isn't measured in weeks, there are loads of clock radios with a builtin charger for an iphone and wifey always has her existing phone on the bedside table, so it could be popped on charge nightly or whatever.

Start of questions

1) What is the minimum iPhone for making a video of average quality, basically one that'll look good on a monitor

2) Was $50 for an iphone 4 good, bad, i have tried looking on trademe but prices seem to be all over the place. $50 was a good price for me to spend for what is currently my wifes hobby, but as i know so little about these phones i didn't buy it.

3) The only other apple product we have is Powermac G4 laptop can the videos be edited on any platform? as we have a windows 10 PC and an Ubuntu LTS (whatever latest version) machine

4) I am not married to the idea of an iphone but it seems to be the one shes mentioned, note she uses Ubuntu on her PC

5) Do they do wiFi? as i would much rather it used wifi or a cable to synch everything up

6) What is the battery life like on these phones, I have read 6 days on somethings, 1 day if its actually being used

6) we are both 2degrees users if that matters.

Thats all i can think of for now, but i'm sure theres more i need to know

3-4 hours of screen on time is typical, less if its a game or something demanding.

can usually get a day at least of screen off, depending on how much background crap is happening.

What does iCloud locked mean? as all the cheap ones seem to have this,

is it basically code for stolen, sort of like works on 2degrees snd telecom but not vodafone meant it was a nicked vodafone phone

http://www.trademe.co.nz/mobile-phones/mobile-phones/iphone/iphone-5/auction-1304582197.htm

@richms - seriously how is a phone usable if its got such short batterlife, does charging daily become a routine, sorry not trying to be rude, I'd always assumed newer phones are better in all ways, but I am suprised battery life is so short. As you can tell I am really not a phone person

Charge it in the car, charge it beside the bed, wireless charging pad on the desk that I put it on. Not away from power for very long and just have it on charge when I am at power.

because they have high definition displays and decent backlights, plus they generally tend to run more apps at once that older ones did.

Rich is talking screen on time, it will last all day if your not using it all the time. mine will usually last 2 days if i only use it 3-5h a day.

I normally charge it every night when i go to bed. I also have a charger at work should i need a boost.

iPhones 4 is seriously obsolete. I suspect once you get one you will realize how much they can do and want bigger, brighter, faster. Tell us your budget and maybe we can give some suggestions.

iCloud lock happens when the owner locks the phone via their iCloud account. This generally only happens when the phone is lost or stolen.

Apple WILL NOT unlock the phone unless you can prove you legitimately own the phone (they will not accept you purchased it 2nd hand and require proof of original receipts from the place of purchase)

Sounds like "iCloud locked" is a synonym for "Stolen".

So why isn't trademe banning these probably stolen phones?

Or the police popping round asking to see the phone and proof of ownership ?

  • iCloud locked ≠ stolen
  • iCloud locked = good for spare parts
  • iCloud locked = forgot my credentials and can't be bothered trying to recover them. Easier to buy a new device and set up new credentials.

money-mouth Seriously, it is out of date. Spend the money on something newer, ideal with an A8 processor or better. Also, see here it the device is capable of running iOS 10. Any older version of iOS is no longer supported.

You will notice how slow the device is and the wait times you have to endure. You're taps will be registered late, which means that you are never really sure if you tapped that key or not. Now oyu wait to see how the phone responds and only after 5 sec of nothing happening will you try again. Please don't waste your time waiting for these types of devices to complete their task. They should be waiting for you.

So @andib is wrong then?
He/she suggests you need credentials to lock it in the first place?

Just because it for parts doesn't mean it's not stolen.

Lots credentials but can't be bothered unlocking something that costs hundreds of dollars? Would that also mean they have lost their photos apps etc.

Just curious.

Not everyone becomes disillusioned with things just because there's something that does more. Clearly the OP isn't someone that does, but that could be a matter of ignorance of the specific advantages of moving to a smartphone or simply that those advantages aren't of any actual benefit to their life.

I have a semi-retired 4S and it takes perfectly good video - it is full HD after all.
