According to NZHerald Google may be making a system to help companies evaluate potential employees. It could give them access to things like your search history and youtube videos.

If this goes ahead, which seems unlikely because it would be such an invasion of privacy, I bet a significant number of people would close their Google accounts. As useful as drive, docs, calendar, gmail, etc is, privacy is more important.

It will reportedly be a recruitment tool similar to LinkedIn - however, early reports suggest it will be available through your personal Google account.

If that's the case, it will link things like your search history and YouTube account with your job applications, laying it all bare for employers to see.

Pfft. NZHerald article quoting UK's "The Sun" as a source.

That's about as close to "speculation and gossip with absolutely no facts to back-up" that one could get to, I'd imagine.

Can't see it working here with NZ's privacy and confidentiality laws unless its something you voluntarily opt into.

Google has decent controls to limit what information they collect and use about you, as well as the fact you can currently easily curate (selectively delete) your Google search history and Youtube history.

Nice FUD though.

Google would be much smarter than that...

Give an applicant a rating or not give a rating would say plenty enough, just another tool in their toolbox to entice more business.

Free hiring or cheaper rates for lower risk business etc, remember some smart fella said once all ways to make money involves bundling and unbundling.

This is just another product.

NZ have followed the footsteps of China and don't have much privacy online anyway.

GCSB is allow to intercept and monitor anything, as long as it's deemed as cyber security related, which in my interpretation is basically everything online can be constructed as cyber security related.

NZSIS and GCSB traditionally operates independently, and was designed to work separately, they now joins forces. GCSB handles all matters in the cyber space, while NZSIS deals with meatspace. To improve efficiency and efficacy, they now are able to work with join warrants etc.

These are the kind of new government powers that China have long employed as their citizens don't have a say, and western countries only starting to follow.

It's quite unprecedented, and I can only imagine the lure of such power for the government.

Well, lure no longer, it's now our reality.

UK does it (Investigatory Powers Act), US recently finally done it albeit differently (online privacy rules), and we're well on our way royal assent was on 28th March 2017.

In this new world, the data points are now pinned on each and everyone individually. But I guess people long given up on privacy, freely uploading all their details onto facebook etc.

I can only hope the government will use the data wisely.
