I have some APC smart-ups UPS (inc Batteries) that I want to get rid off today. Were can I depose of them in the Wellington CBD, preferably for free?

Also I don't think they are working, as they do not power up.

Just a note for potential takers: if a battery degrades beyond a certain point, most UPS will not power on until a working battery is installed.

Not saying that anyone can be certain that is the problem with these ones, but it could be this simple. The batteries for this size of UPS are usually able to be had for around $30 a pop, smaller UPS (<750VA) take one and the larger ones (>800VA) take 2.

Also metal recyclers will give you a buck or two for the dead batteries :)

Thanks for that. I've tried a few attempts at trying to get them working. But all three of them died at the sometime during a power cut and never came back on. I've tried a self-test process which involves turning them on with the battery disconnected.

The last battery cost me $210+GST in October 2015. Model RBC7

Branded UPS batteries are just standard SLAs, stuck together with double sided tape and a connector attached to the terminals.

e-waste on the WCC website. You have to go to the southern landfill if you want it disposed of for free free, although a UPS isn't covered in the free. The sustainability trust takes e-waste for a fee, they're at 2 Forresters Lane Te Aro.

Small 7-9 Ah batteries are about $25, but once you get up to the higher capacity ones like used in that APC pack, the savings over buying the batteries individually quickly disappears since the 19Ah and similar sized ones are not as cheap as you would think being they are about twice a 9Ah capacity-wise - last one I got was about $110 or so, which makes 2 of them with a wire already attached not that badly priced.

Not like when someone I know called the 0800 number on the front of a beeping UPS and was sold a $140 9Ah 12v battery and then also a rush courier charge because they wanted it in a hurry.

Each battery is 12.41kg, disposal change is $5 per kg and I have total of 4 batteries. $248.20 just to get rid of these dirty batteries. :(

Scrappys will take them and sometimes give you a little money when I have got rid of them in the past.
