Can CDs and DVDs, and the cases they came in, go in the council recycle bin?

What about VHS and data tapes?

I've been having a bit of a clean out in the garage and I am simultaneously amazed and embarrassed by how much of the above I've got lying around.

Pretty sure none of the above are recyclable in council bins.

Oh, I should have mentioned, Auckland City Council Recycle Bin. Such items are not on the yes list or the no list.

How are others disposing of their old media?

That does indeed look awesome.

So the consensus would be not to just biff it the weekly rubbish/recycle collection.

I dont think Pukekohe has a transfer station any more.

I have also got a substantial pile of cables now too.

Will bundle it all up and either wait for next local ewaste collection, or take a trip over the bridge.

Unless you potentially want your home movies etc to be "public", yes :) Scratch the CDs, break the VHS housing and scrunch up a bunch of the tape would be my first move.

If the CD's and DVD's are commercial music and movies, why not donate them to a charity.

Other CD's - ie PCWorld, Windows, games etc distros, then recycle them. Or bin them. I've put the cases in the recycling, and binned the actual media itself.

Copied music and Movie CD / DVD- pass them around family members. Then it's their problem to dispose of them.

I am surprised at how many CD's are now pinholed - this includes some well known brands. Most of them were created in the late 80's - mid 90's.
