Canterbury Weather Updates was an amazing Weather forecast by Facebook page that was a couple of guys who started posted Canterbury weather.

After a wee while, they started trying to monetize it by offering text alerts, and personalised Weather Forecast, spamming their followers with advertising.

Then they wanted peoples photos for 'recognition' so they could post a calendar to cover their costs to post on Facebook.

Then they put a very advertising heavy website with a rather poor interface.

And now they've just stopped offering anything beyond the basic "Weather for today is" and asking for a monthly sub fee for see anything beyond today.

I posted a rather annoyed comment on their Facebook page, because they didn't mention this, providing a bait and switch "click on our website to see forecasts for your city" without mentioning the fact it now costs to see anything basically beyond a simple summary of todays weather.

They responded by deleting my comment and blocking/banning me from their Facebook.

I'm frustrated because they offer LESS than Metservice, or Weather underground, and spam everyone with advertising while abusing their "Just a couple of guys" attitude that gained them so much attention in the beginning.

I can't blame them, but I am angry about it, and their complete lack of transparency around the changes for what is frankly pretty lacking weather forecasts I followed because I liked their attitude, and now they've devolved into a corporate shill for Mitsubishi and whoever else will pay them for a service you can for free and better elsewhere.

If you ever read this - Good one guys. Nice to see you've become that which you fought so hard to avoid in the first place.

Well isn't that just rude of them, waiting to get paid for their time etc.  Maybe you should lead the way and start working for free, that will show them.

Use Metservice if you want free stuff.  I personally use metvuw.co.nz

Time is money at the end of the day, If they had the initial intentions to be reporting weather and forecasting weather freely then they are hypocrites and it ends there. Don't bother spending your time to devalue their PR.

What ever the case is it sounds like they are going to go downhill from the sounds of that, If not good on them and they are doing something that works.

I think the lack of transparency is what would annoy me and possibly the OP, not the fact that they want to get paid for providing the service... Remember the LogMeIn saga?

If they are as bad as you say, no doubt others will feel the same and they will lose subscribers. I wouldn't worry about it.

The one lesson I can see is that communication is key to keeping customers on side.

Would you have felt better had they stated up front and in advance about fees/advertising and their rationale for those?

How many weather forecasts do we need? It is available for free all over the place.

Let me count the ways that essentially identical information can be offered...!

I use Accuweather and find it very good.

In this case, they do not seem to have been very sensible about how they went about it and the end result is that they won't get the OP's dollars. That's their issue, surely, rather than OP's given that OP can get the information somewhere else easily.

I'd say stop using Facebook as a source of news. Use the actual sources and you will be better off.

Thanks for everyone's responses, I did warn you this was purely a rant! lol.

I get it, "how dare they charge for their time" and "if you don't like them don't use them" and "Don't use Facebook".

The point is I started following them because they were a couple of guys in highschool, doing awesome stuff, having awesome ideas and supported them by spreading their word because I wanted to support them and help drive ad-revenue.

I loved what they were doing not what they did, they capitalized and prided themselves on 'not one of the big guys' until they got big enough they then leveraged that to try and force their user base into paying for the most basic of weather service without telling anyone they'd changed.

They didn't advertise this change, and still advertise their Services on Facebook without a single mention of anything beyond todays weather being COMPLETELY Pay-per-month only.
