My girlfriend has wanted a telescope for a while now (for general star and planet gazing) but is unsure of how often it will get used, so we are reluctant to drop $1,000-1,500 on a device that we may end up not using much.  Part of the reason for this is because we live in an Auckland inner suburb and star gazing isn't so easy with all the light pollution from the city and surrounds.  So we'd likely have to travel away from the city to get the most benefit out of it.

Does anyone know of any places that hire telescopes?  It would be ideal if we could trial a telescope close to what we might end up purchasing to avoid wasting our hard earned cash.

Thanks in advance?

you want to touch base with the AAA (Auckland Astronomical Society) http://www.astronomy.org.nz/new/public/default.aspx

part of their $40 membership is telescope rental

also via their store they have very good dobsonian telescopes for sale that won't break the bank (https://www.astronz.nz/shop/)

I have a friend who is an enthusiast. He poopoo'd the entire idea and said unless you are experienced, renting one will just be an excercise in futility. Knowing where and how to correctly point it, when and what you are looking at once you can see, is more complicated than most people thing.

I'm gonna take my kids round to his place and get him to show me some stuff.

Actually a decent pair of binoculars is not a bad place to begin if you're just starting out. Some people do find the whole "looking with one eye" thing difficult to deal with.
