CNN has run a couple of cryptic reports recently about American diplomatic staff in Cuba being the target of mysterious 'sonic weapon' attacks. The reports don't actually contain much information, and they are mostly speculative. Does anyone know any more about this, or what could possibly be behind it? What kinds of sonic weapons could possibly be involved?

Maybe "Despacito" on an endless loop? On a more serious note, I do recall a "Future Weapons" episode on Discovery a few years ago where they had a sonic weapon that would stop people in their tracks due to discomfort caused by it. Wonder if it's something similar.

I've seen sonic weapons demonstrated as a means of repelling pirates from merchant shipping.

I'd personally just shoot the pirates but I guess some people want to save them for the next ship!

This attack was at a frequency you can't actually hear iirc, not just something to harass them but injure them over an extended period of time.

Funny, not funny when you realise "Despacito" is from Puerto Rico, which is part of USA, not from Cuba.

I'd apply Occam's razor tp eliminate speculation that it's some wildly bizarre science-fiction based undetectable "sonic weapon" implemented by some nation state, but ototoxic effect due to accidental or deliberate chemical or pharmaceutical exposure.

I'd guess further that US diplomatic staff are given anti-malarial prophylaxis when visiting Cuba - the symptoms do match side effects of some of these medications - especially if used long-term

Then I'd guess that under the Trump regime, the US State Dept would be looking for proof that Cuba are evil, in order to justify Trump's reversal of Obama's easing of sanctions against Cuba.

I heard someone on National Radio discussing it last week. From what I recall she thought it was unlikely as it's either loud (like the pirate deterrent) or if it's silent then it needs to be very close to the person, pointed straight at them, and the device is often quite large physically.
