Why do people post these silly little "challenges" on Facebook such as, "Name a fish that does not have the letter 'A' in it. Bet you can't"? I assume that when people post an answer they are giving all their Facebook data to the OP? Is that how it works? The "challenges' are so puerile and stupid that people can't possibly post them for any other reason but to harvest users data. At least, that is my assumption. Any thoughts?

And there's the thing. These quizzes are so tempting to quickly give an answer, in effect to disprove the dare "Bet you can't!". Such a human impulse. And a surprising number of my Facebook friends, who should know better, answer these damn things. I want to post a comment on them, "Don't be such a damn fool. if you answer, you are giving away your email and other data." But of course, that is no different to answering, "trout".

Commenting on a Facebook post does not provide the poster with any more information than that already publicly available on your profile by anyone. The only way your email address is visible to anyone is if it's (stupidly) set to public on your profile. These quizzes really are nothing more than a bit of fun (not for me personally), and a way for Facebook pages to increase engagement (and therefore hopefully gain more likes leading to more ad revenue).

I think it is just to get their 'likes' or replies count up - may make them more relevant in Facebook's algorithms for 'Thing You Might Be Interested In' etc.

All the people I see on facebook that do this stuff are my parents or their friends, or parents of friends. Anytime they do it I try send them a message telling them what it's really about, but they don't get it and never will. It's up to Facebook and other platforms to phase out this type of crap. Like I heard they were trying to phase out the "you'll never believe what happened next" type of click bait statuses and links. Though I still see plenty of those.
