Aloha everyone from chilly Dunedin. A friend of mine in Ireland has launched a new service called Twitterfone which allows you to call into a phone number, and have your short (under 15 second) message converted to text and posted to your Twitter account. It's taken about a week but they just got the bugs worked out on their NZ access number. Here's my first Twitterfone tweet, and the call that got it posted to Twitter.

The service is free, and by invite only at the moment. I have about 8 invite codes, so if anyone would like to try it please contact me here on Geekzone and I'll send you a code. Once I run out of these invites you'll have to follow Pat Phelan on Twitter as he periodically tweets new invite codes.

Interesting. Is this automated speech-to-text or someone is transcribing - like some other reminder services?

Aloha Mauricio, I believe it uses voice recognition software, and isn't always perfect but pretty darn accurate. I was shocked that it spelled "aloha" correctly, thoughh I said "the land of long white cloud" and it heard "a land". For hardcore Twitter users who are mobile and don't have QWERTY keyboards it's quicker than trying to type your tweets. If you use Twitter and would like an invite code let me know.

I'd love to try out Twitterfone. I don't know how many times it could have been useful for times when I was driving or other situations where I couldn't easily update. Thanks!

The one mentioned is invite only, but the site that appears to be the power behind it does twitter, emailing, and more, with no apparent signup restriction?

What makes Twitterfone better / different?

Aloha. I don't know much about the backend to this, other than as you say, Dial2Do does provide it. It also appears to require an invite. I don't use it so can't say what else Twitterfone can or will do at this point. Like I mentioned earlier, just helping my friend in Ireland spread the word about the service. I do have some Twitterfone invites to give away (6 left), don't have any for Dial2Do.
