Hey guys.

Yesterday I was sitting and my desk, on my laptop when all of a sudden I heard a pop. Looked down and saw that all the lights were off on the modem, so I thought something fell on it. Couldn't see anything, then felt my phone charger which was plugged in and it was very hot. My modem, phone charger and laptop power are all plugged into the same 4 piece power switch. Luckily my laptop charger wasn't plugged into my laptop at the time or that could of been toast.

Anyway, my phone charger was quite hot, pulled it out of the switch/socket and saw that there were burn marks on the 4 piece switch. Smelt my phone charger and it smelt very burnt, quickly put it outside incase it blew up or something.

My modem no longer works now, I'm assuming it had a burst of power going through it, I have rung 2D and they are sending a new modem.

I'm wondering what the deal would be with my phone charger? My phone is a OnePlus 3T, purchased around 9 months ago I'd guess, from Noel leeming. Would they source me a replacement charger, or because it's just 1 piece, would they not? I can still charge via portable charger/USB, just not through the conventional method.

Did the faulty phone charger cause the problems? Your post is a little difficult to follow.

If so then you could ask them to replace under warranty. I also wonder if they're responsible for paying for other damage it caused... no idea.

In general though you could just buy a charger and use that. I use this little charger which works well.

2D said they will send me a modem for free, so really no cost involved.

That charger you recommend, it's fine to work with a One plus 3T?

If it's the OEM charger that caused the issue, I'm not sure I'd want a replacement. Probably find they do a recall or free swap programme if enough people have the same problem.... but until then you might just get a replacement prone to the same issue.

Just grab a decent USB charger from anywhere... Belkin do good ones. Any charger with a USB input will do so long as it's the right wattage.

You could alsways try asking Noel Leeming for a replacement ... tell them you'd be happy with a replacement off the shelf if its possible

With the OnePlus 3T it uses USB-C. If you use the incorrect cable the power draw is often too high for most chargers.

I strongly recommend just going to JB-HiFi or PB and purchasing an OPPO VOOC charger and using the original red USB cable that came with the OnePlus - it'll from there dash charge and you won't have any heat issues.

For UsbC the compact charger I recommended might get too hot. Get something larger that's designed for sustained high current charging.

I'd tend towards a good brand, maybe more like Belkin or one of the big charging vendors than oem.

If the charger gets too hot and goes pop when you ask too much current of it, then its a faulty design. USB charging is supposed to have a current limit on the charger. Some crap ones dont, and this happens. Not fit for purpose so a replacement is warrented and if it keeps happening then IMO they need to be recalled if getting so hot that they damage a power outlet

I doubt a charger going pop would do anything to any other appliance plugged into the same powerstrip, which I am assuming a 4 piece power switch means. Could cause the powerstrip to fail if the heat went into it and it deformed where something connects, so try connecting elsewhere and see if that works before waiting on a replacement modem.

Thanks for the replies.

Regarding the modem, I tried plugging it in different spots around my place and the same thing kept happening, power light went on, started flashing, then everything flashed up like it had just been turned on, kept doing that in a loop. Literally unusable. Would it be possible for my phone line to be fried also, orbis that highly unlikely? Just thinking ahead for when the new modem arrives.

As for the phone charger. Yesterday I was charging via USB cable and my laptop, very slow though. Tried my Rapoo portable charger today and it's so much faster, I'm assuming it's safe to use? I think it's best I take the charger back to NL tomorrow, because my phone was plugged in at the same time, if my phone battery starts playing up anytime in the future, then they have a record as to why.

Perhaps it was a surge and nothing to do with the phone charger? DSL routers are a prime thing to get them since they are also connected to the phone network.

Hmm maybe? I don't know anything about electrics myself.

The phone cahrger was the one that smelt burnt and left a burnt mark though.

The issue could have easily been your multi board. I've seen plenty that after continual use some end up with loose connectors that have the potential to cause arcing.

Particually if they have had damaged/bent plugs forced into them. Those shrouded pins bend so easily and then cause damage that I have probably about 6 powerstrips around the place with an X over one of the sockets because it no longer has any grip. Slowly replacing the arlec/elto/other CDB brands ones with HPM ones as they seem to last a little longer but all are pretty bad.

Multi boards, phone chargers, etc. It's bloody hard to tell if any of this Chinese made stuff is reliable or quality any more.

Can you describe in explicit detail how the phone charger was connected to the phone. In particular, describe the position of the cable between the charger and the phone.

People often wind the cable from the charger into a loop for the purpose of tidiness.

Even the NZ fire brigades - who are well behind the times in electrical equipment safety - have recognized this as a hazard.
