Possum? Wasn't kind of expecting something like that in the central west Auckland Suburbs!

Be thankful you don't have foxes in NZ. The sound they make is horrendous.

Laughing apparently though it wasn't laughing as my German Shepherd came out of the house full tilt and chased him across the lawn. Both were moving so quick I thought it was a cat initially.

Thunder was in full on killer mode. Fur up and growling like a beast!

+1 for this.

Many a time had them outside the window making noises like that. The ones that sound like wheezing old men laughing can be a little disconcerting at first too :D

While dogs can be vicious possums are hard units and a dog is likely to come off second best. Also possums can carry TB

Yeah, I was raised on a farm with lots of bush and I've seen a couple of P v D fights.

True. You can impersonate it with a blade of grass and lure them out if you know how - I was taught by our shoot's Keeper, as we used to go out and knock the local foxes over to keep the pheasants alive!

I found one sleeping in a tree last week (or more accurately, my dogs found it). Tough or not, being shot up the behind from about 10 m away seemed to work..! They are actually pretty heavy things too.
