An Optus help wanted ad has appeared calling for 'Anglo Saxon' staff. The ad was soon removed and Optus has apologised and announced an investigation and said all the right things, so no issue there, but one has to wonder if this was possibly an act of sabotage by a disgruntled employee or just an act of unbelievable stupidity by someone who has been living in a pre-war time bubble. Or maybe racism is just alive and well in Australia?

Either an act of deliberate sabotage, or some idiot who had consumed too much beer or wine?

I don't think I can summon the energy to care much either way.

It may be alive, but it's not very well in Australia.

I've live in Ozzy, admittedly big cities, not small towns, and they are very multicultural. Many have inter cultural relationships. You can find every culture holding any high ranking jobs at any time. Unfortunately first generation refugees have a major issue - you see 20 year old Somalis slashing each other with knives, because that was what they were used to doing back in Somalia, and that's the only thing they know how to do in Australia. So integration might be an issue. Racism? Well, *everyone is a bit racist, but that does not mean anybody are oppressed, other than the Aboriginals, because the white Australians seem to still be able to pick on them.

Racism is probably more rife in UK and Europe, but that's from reading news and social media, haven't been there to experience it first hand.

* this is my neutral and honest observation in life, does not mean it should be condone

That's hilarious. Few apart from scholars proficient in ancient languages would have a foggy clue what an Anglo Saxon was talking about, even if Optus could whistle up a few in the tardis.  Perhaps they'll be wanting them for help desk staff.

It's a sad world we live in when employers can't even say they want to hire a white English speaking employee without the world coming to an end. I'm sure a bunch of people on GZ will moan and bitch saying it's racist, and then will turn around and also moan that the last call centre employee that had to speak too for their ISP had a strong accent.

I don't think these two things can be equated, nor should they be. A person's enunciation has nothing to do with their skin colour. There are plenty of white native-born kiwis who are incapable of speaking comprehensible English.

Sad? I'm very happy it's no longer 1956 and the people that would advertise for white staff are dead or close to it.

A few points

1. Optus is owned by Singapore's Singtel, is not Aussie owned.

2. Have you ever seen Anglo Saxons working in Chinese restaurants? Just my observation. Similarly, employers do discriminate without publicly announcing. Some look for males, some look for females, some look for looks, and some look for hard working people.

3. Completely agree with Rikitik

Have you ever lived permanently in a country where you are the ethnic minority in cultural and political terms?

It's all and good for white people in power to claim they treat everyone equally when history shows the opposite..... Which is why we have these laws in the first place...

Why would an employer ever need to specifically employ someone with white skin unless they ran a pub for skinheads?  I've certainly complained out loud to workmates that I really struggled to understand the odd CSR's from the other side of the world but I'd never mention skin colour.

So you would seem to agree that the advertiser is a moron who did not intend to exclude people of Scottish, Irish or Welsh descent.
