On such a serious/sensitive topic I would advise that your best bet is to approach a licenced gun dealer (Hunting/fishing store etc), a Rifle / Hunting Club, or the New Zealand Police.

I'd say that under the direct supervision of someone with the appropriate firearms licence, that this is not an issue. But this is only an educated guess - please follow my advice in the first paragraph.

If you are under the direct supervision of a Firearms license holder no, however if you are not then that is illegal despite you being within the confines of home, much the same way as it's illegal for someone under 15 without a drivers license to drive their parents car round the block.

Hope that helps.

Never ask what sort of computer a guy drives. If he's a Mac user, he'll tell you. If not, why embarrass him?

yeah, i'd ring the police station and ask to speak to the firearms officer.  They are generally pretty helpful.

so will you be fined or warned if a person under 18 is in possesion of a parent's real gun at their home?

He said it's illegal. If it's fine or warning you should really ask a lawyer. I think it's better to lock this discussion now and avoid incorrect advise being handed out in any case.
