I've recently moved to BigPipe and everything is going pretty swimmingly.
The odd thing is that Google thinks that the static IP address I have been given is somewhere in Wellington. My search results now feature Wellington-based companies and locations. How very curious.
When I ask Google where I am, it says
Khandallah, Wellington 6035
When I dig into it using https://www.where-am-i.co/ it is even more particular saying:
Your Decimal
latitude and longitude: -41.251826099999995
174.7734663 Your Sexagesimal
latitude and longitude: S41°15'6.574''
E174°46'24.478'' Your Address: 1 Crofton Rd, Ngaio, Wellington 6035, New Zealand
After trawling (not trolling) through the various Google forums, it seems it should eventually sort itself out. As:
"My location" is ideally determined by gps. This is what your iPhone does. Failing that, wifi can be used. Google determines where a wifi is by looking at the gps position of devices that are connected to the wifi. In time, Google learns where the device is located. Cell towers also can be used for position.
But if you're connected to the internet by a wire, or by wifi with a device that recently moved, Google will have a hard time determining your position. It's probably using the position of one of the server's on the path from you to Google.
The more often I use my iPhone (connected to my router that has the IP address), the sooner I expect Google will realise that I'm not in Wellington.
That said, some other Geolocation services (as listed on https://www.iplocation.net/) show that I am in Auckland (correct!).
It's an issue I've never thought about really; the consequences of an ISP moving/changing/allocating IP address and how that might trip-up some geolocation services.
Anyway, not a problem, just an observation.
(maybe this post is in the wrong location, like me)
