I've recently moved to BigPipe and everything is going pretty swimmingly.

The odd thing is that Google thinks that the static IP address I have been given is somewhere in Wellington. My search results now feature Wellington-based companies and locations. How very curious.

When I ask Google where I am, it says

Khandallah, Wellington 6035

When I dig into it using https://www.where-am-i.co/ it is even more particular saying:

Your Decimal
latitude and longitude: -41.251826099999995
174.7734663 Your Sexagesimal
latitude and longitude: S41°15'6.574''
E174°46'24.478'' Your Address: 1 Crofton Rd, Ngaio, Wellington 6035, New Zealand

After trawling (not trolling) through the various Google forums, it seems it should eventually sort itself out. As:

"My location" is ideally determined by gps. This is what your iPhone does. Failing that, wifi can be used. Google determines where a wifi is by looking at the gps position of devices that are connected to the wifi. In time, Google learns where the device is located. Cell towers also can be used for position.

But if you're connected to the internet by a wire, or by wifi with a device that recently moved, Google will have a hard time determining your position. It's probably using the position of one of the server's on the path from you to Google.

The more often I use my iPhone (connected to my router that has the IP address), the sooner I expect Google will realise that I'm not in Wellington.

That said, some other Geolocation services (as listed on https://www.iplocation.net/)   show that I am in Auckland (correct!).

It's an issue I've never thought about really; the consequences of an ISP moving/changing/allocating IP address and how that might trip-up some geolocation services.

Anyway, not a problem, just an observation.

(maybe this post is in the wrong location, like me)

There are many things in play and BigPipe is not the culprit here.

First your IP address is part of a block assigned to the ISP. The address used for the block is usually your ISP's office - not your address. Some IP addresses are dynamics, some are CG-NAT so you won't get a good resolution from this method - only a general idea of country.

Then you have the device's location. Some devices will use GPS, some will use the cell site location (if mobile) and some will use your gateway to determine location.

When people use Google maps, all available networks are collected and stored by Google. This is one way for it to know for sure where you are. But still you can get wrong data - if you have a router you used in Wellington and send to Napier then Google will report anyone around it as in Wellington (it happened to a Geekzone moderator when I sent a router I've used before in Wellington for them to use in Napier).

So, unless your device has a GPS and mobile data you won't get better than what you have.

Yes, I never thought that Bigpipe was the culprit; it was more an observation of the complexity of the systems we have and use.

It will be interest to see if (when? how quickly) Google realises I'm not in Wellington.

I'm curious to know whether being incorrectly reported as being in the wrong part of NZ actually is detrimental to your use of the Internet at all? If so, how?

I wondered who provided the dancers? You'd think a group ex New Zealand would have known they weren't appropriate. Were the dancers a bunch of local ring-ins?

I wanted some new UTP cables, so I googled "J R Russell" to see when they are open;  Google gives me the Wellington branches and times (whereas it used to give me the Auckland branches). Easy to work around with a 'better' search string.

TV 3 on demand TV also thinks I've moved to Wellington. When it plays ads now, they are all for Wellington companies. My wife said, "I didn't realise they did regional advertising" ::smile::

DDoS Protection crap just ate my response :(

What I had said was, use your GPS and do some searches while on your home Wifi.  Google will figure itself out eventually.

I think that as Wellington is the best city in the world to live in, it is actually just Google giving you a recommendation.
