When I was around 10, I remember being given a SwanDri jacket, and loved it because it was so warm and kept the wind out.
Now Im older, Im wanting to look for a good jacket.

Must be warm (lined usually), waterproof/resistant (yet both these terms get thrown around being as the same thing these days) and not too bulky. Not worried about a hood ( I have a beanie :) ) and other whizbang options, and preferably something that can be worn out casually without looking like a raincoat ;)

Budget : well... cheaper the better (as always) but want something decent thats going to last.

So, suggestions ? :)

I went for a 'puffer' jacket from Macpac … check out their stores and Kathmandu etc … quite stylish these days.

I'm a huge fan of the cactuswear canvas clothes.  NZ made and last forever!

The jacket for you may be https://www.cactusoutdoor.co.nz/clothing/jackets-and-vests/canvas-jackets/collared-jacket-mens.html but they also do (more expensive) down ones if required

Hmm Jackets I may own way way too many (probably something like 30 plus). I would suggest you go have a look at Bivouac for the biggest range of brands. While I own several of the NZ Macpac and Kathmandu  staples (I love the XT range) I am very fond of Arc'teryx (Atom SV/LT super light weight  and versatile (own 3 colours) while the Thorium range is my go to outer wear as not bulky and 750/800 goose down but not bulky may own 5 of these oops), Mons Royale (my go to indoor jacket is the Hero hoody) and I like some Icebreaker (great Merino). https://www.bivouac.co.nz/

Recently also got some of the Japanese Superdry range which look really nice but the sizing is super small.

You don't have to go into a shop, free shipping (next day delivery) and free returns, for any reason (refund or 110% store credit).

Most of the name brands are there.

My starting point for any jacket is generous internal chest pockets - phone, wallet etc.

I have a black, lined, woollen 'bomber' style jacket for this purpose in Wellington.  It goes with anything.  It's not waterproof, but it resists water for a while and dries quickly.  Breathes well so adaptable to a width of temperature.

I do like the look of those canvas jackets though.

BTW Swannie still do jackets including some casual wear styles.  Bit pricey

Agreed but hardly waterproof, in fact, probably the opposite of waterproof, they are a sponge.

I can't recall the name but got a Kathmandu goretex jacket that fabulous.  Has a removable hood and also a removable inner layer so it is easily adaptable to the conditions.  Cost was about $400 on special.

I've got one very similar to what you describe, and it's great.  Mine is very similar to this one (NGX2), with the removable liner/vest (which my wife has appropriated).  Great as a windbreak, waterproof, adjustable, excellent quality and made to last.  Bought on clearance for about $200 a couple of years ago.

Icebreaker make some really nice stuff... and I think there's still an outlet store near the airport. The retail prices are pretty high.

Get a ski jacket that breathes well.

I have moved on from puffer jackets. First they are not usually waterproof and I don't want to look like a Michelin man.

If you want a long cowboy coat that's a different fashion style.

Pretty much all jackets are water resistant only rather than waterproof (unless it's PVC but you sweat a lot in those), but if the fabric is durable it's not a problem to reproof the waterproof coating.

If you're after cheap and waterproof, have a look at some army surplus gear? There's 2 or 3 army surplus stores around NZ.

(I paid $50 for a Bulgarian wool great coat and it works pretty well in the recent cold/wet/windy wellington weather)
