In Wellington you can take them to the Southern Landfill (https://wellington.govt.nz/services/environment-and-waste/landfill/second-treasures-shop)

These CDs are not suitable for the Second Treasures Shop.

Some web sites say they are 90% poly/plastic and can be recycled, others say land fill …. confusing.

I put them through our shredder at work it has a slot for cd/dvd's and is fun poking them in there. Well those and anything else I can fit in there to see what happens.

I gave mine (800 odd) to Cash Converters on the proviso they picked them up. To think I used to buy a CD that I might just listen to once every few months? $24,000 worth of CD's dumped? Stupid me.

I've got a bunch of DVD's and Blu-Rays I popped on Trademe. I sold all of one of them. They've been sitting in my spare room since. I should probably box them up and donate them someplace.

I sold a few (hundred or so) CDs at Slow Boat Records and RPM (both in Wellington). Whatever was left I gave to Salvation Army.

Disks are ripped to my NAS which is how I organise and listen to them nowadays.

As for the disks themselves, I got rid of the cases and (in most cases) the liners/inserts etc to save space. The disks are all in a carton at the back of the garage, in case future need: ie catastrophic NAS failure or needing to have them in a different format. CDs/DVDs take up comparatively little space without the cases and inserts.

How much did you get for them?

A small amount - I think around $3 - 5 each or so, depending on demand.

The local Rotary here (in Howick) have an annual sale of books and CDs

The CDs are $1 each, and some are in pristine condition, musically and physically

I walked away with a boxful of someones carefully cataloged collection,

part of a deceased estate. It gives me pause to ponder as I listen to vibrant jazz

compositions while the original collector is decomposing ;-)

I use them as drink coasters...or to scare away birds in the vegetable plot.

If you are just going to chuck them out, I could be interested in any original CDs.. it depends of course on what the content is on them lol

(I run a radio station you see.. always on the lookout for tracks I don't have).

Cheers,
Grant
