With all the bad news on TV news shows, a story like this is quite uplifting.  She managed to keep herself afloat for 10 hours before being rescued by a coast guard vessel.

I looked up the sea temperature and at the moment many parts of Croatia report a sea temp. of 27 plus degrees.  She looks very fit and does yoga so this would have helped.

If she had been doing this cruise in mid winter she'd almost certainly be dead.

Not just the water temperature, also the weather.

In a storm, I suspect this would have had a very different outcome. Fortunately, as you say, the Adriatic is relatively warm - and lacks significant shark populations etc!

I wonder if there is a small, unobtrusive buoyancy aid that could be used by cruise passengers?

Edit - yes. This.

The ship still hasn't been released as how she fell off the stern of the boat at around midnight the night she fell, they are reviewing CCTV footage last time I read.

I can fathom a guess how.

And then there's surviving the fall itself. Most of the public spaces on cruise ships from where a fall is possible, are really high up above the water line.

And of course, the question of how she fell. The barriers are really high - you can't fall over them by accident so it makes you wonder if she climbed one, or if there was foul play involved. I wonder what the CCTV will reveal.

10 hours is nothing.

Rob Hewitt survived 3 days floating in the sea near Wellington in 2006. That must have been a lot colder.

My guess would be some alcohol, & a wish to get a dramatic photo for facebook/instagram/twitter. Far more likely than foul play.

That was an amazing story - almost incomprehensible to me that he could survive it. But he's a hard man and trained navy diver, in a wetsuit, with a buoyancy device (BCD). If he just fell in that sea in his clothes I doubt he would have lasted out the day.
