Old forum threads are automatically locked because we had example of newbiews posting new, off topic questions on old discussions, with a lot of people getting really annoyed with that.

I use about 10 plus news groups a day and no others have this auto lock feature.  It is a real pain on subjects like this one  where  the orginal discussion is still valid  some months later and you have to create a new subject referencing back to the old one to get info..

Agreed, but it does stop really old posts being resurrected when they are long finished.

Having said that, this is way off topic and would be best raised in a new post Cool

You could always request it to be unlocked? There are plenty of moderators around, usually one or two in IRC too that can help.

You can always ask a moderator to unlock old threads.

We do this to keep all tidy - a lot of people have no concept of "threads" "on topic" and "off topic" you know...
