Two years ago we spent six weeks in Normandy, not far from the D-Day landing beaches. I’ve been reading a bit about D-Day recently and some of the photos got me thinking:

First, a shot of paratroopers from the the US 82nd Airborne Division walking through the small village of St Marcouf in Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944:

Second, a screen-shot taken today of St Marcouf on Google Maps street view, using a similar camera angle:

There was a Power Point presentation doing the rounds with quite a collection of similar photos.

Nice, especially the first one.  So little has changed.

Very cool. I did something similar a few years back, but not related to WWII. This is my great grandfather's shop in Devonport. I'm pretty sure I've matched the old and the new correctly.

I spent quite a lot of time in Normandy having grown up next door, as it were.

The Mulberry Harbour at Arramanches is still worth a visit and has a display on site showing what it looked like then and now.

Yes, have been there - the Mulberry thing alone is an incredible story. Have studied D-Day in considerable (amateur) depth - somewhat understated in my OP comments.

Just did these two - the same paratroopers from my first pair of photos (and the same young guy looking towards the camera in both photos) - a few minutes later - at the far end of the lane beside the graveyard in St Marcouf, camera looking back the other way:
