I am perplexed at a couple of my devices.

1. My router - when i reboot it, it won't connect to Spark UFB at first. Just won't. (I wait 10 mins). Then after rebooting it repeatedly, after a few attempts it will eventually connect.

2. My laptop - when I wake up from hibernation/sleep, sometimes it will show me a blank screen. It's awake underneath but screen completely blank. But if I put it back to sleep (power button is configured to induce sleep) and then wake it up, the screen will then work (always). I can see that it has woken from sleep as everything is showing from previous use.

I find that perplexing.

3. Fanpass App on ATV 4. Open the app and you just get a spinning wheel. Back to the home screen and open the app a 2nd time and hey presto you're in.

I feel your pain.

When I started as a techo back in the 80’s when something went faulty or produced  an error state I was determined to find the root cause.  With the advent of Windows, multi-threading, faster and faster clock-speeds, etc. I came to accept that restoring something back to service without fully understanding why it had failed was acceptable.

I guess if we take it back to basics and consider that most electronic devices are still silicon with added impurities, i.e. reliant on chemistry, an environmental fluctuation (temperature, humidity, voltage) could  cause a 1 to appear where there should be a 0 and chaos ensues.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

@Batman - try power cycling both the ONT and the router at the same time. That works first time, every time (at least, for me).

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Asking mum for ice cream - no. Asking dad - sure, whatever. Works every time, 60% of the time.

I never did. Still don't.

You can have a fault where it may be intermittently connecting or some such, but there is always a reason.

I hate not knowing the why.

I have a similar experience with Plex on Fire TV.  Resuming playback from my NAS just endlessly spins.  Return to previous screen and try again, works fine.  Can only assume it's something to do with waking from sleep (either the NAS or the Fire TV), but can't be bothered trying to work out why...

As someone with a traditional engineering brain rather than an IT brain, I feel exactly the same way.

Whenever I have a problem with my computer the helpdesk don't seem to perform any diagnostic activities - instead they start by working through a checklist of generic solutions in the hope that one of them will be effective. That's fine in terms of making the symptoms of the problem disappear, but if you don't understand the underlying cause then the problem is going to just keep occurring.

Don't get me wrong. I also like to understand why, but pragmatism kicks in. Customers typically just want things to work, a lot of them won't want to pay xx hours extra to get to the 'aha' moment.  Also with technology complexity I have come to accept that I can't know everything about everything.

I don't know about fibre as computing has become a lot faster but some older tech had a built in random delay before handshaking so if there was a power fail everything wouldn't try to restart at the same time. If you didn't have the patience to wait maybe switching off&on would get you a shorter time.
