I purchased a monitor (around $500) off Dick Smith on Boxing Day, and it was shipped from Australia on the 27th. According to tracking, it has been sitting at "Customs held for inspection and clearance" since December 30. I haven't received any post saying anything like duty or GST is liable.

I realize this is over the New Year break, and things may be a bit slower than usual, but is this normal?

I'd say anything under 2 weeks during this period is normal. it's 1st day at work for most people.

Hardly surprising this time of year.

Who is it being shipped with? Since you'll haven't heard from anybody I can assume it's not DHL/UPS/Fedex who handle their own processing of GST and IETF fees and because they submit goods before arrival you can pay this immediately for clearance.

If it's NZ Post I believe they still post you the letter for payment in most cases, so it can take time for them to process the goods and send this for the GST and IETF.

OK thanks - that's good to know. Luckily, I'm not in a screaming hurry for it, as I have too much work on to install it anyway.

From their site:
"All of our products are sent using the most reliable courier and freight services available such as Australia Post, Toll, DHL and FedEx."
So who knows. frown

A plausible scenario:

  • Parcel received at Customs 30 XII.  That's a Sunday; nothing happens.
  • Parcel assessed for GST and biosecurity fees 31 XII.  Assessment given to NZ Post to transmit to you.
  • NZ Post posts assessment letter to you 3 I (first working day after 31 XII).
  • Assessment letter takes three working days to reach you: 4, 7, 8 I.

Maybe contact NZ Post if you haven't received the assessment letter by Wednesday.

Yep, that's plausible. I'm almost glad I don't have it to be honest - I'd end up futzing around with it and miss a brutal work deadline as a consequence laughing
