I've been asked to replace the curly telephone cord that connects between the handset and main unit (Uniden SSE27) … wiggling the cord causes static and the phone often disconnects when being used, so probably a broken wire or faulty plug.

The plug is quite slim compared to other phone cables, so probably RJ11-4C/4P-US modular plug type?

Not a lot of retailers left selling these, but some I've found describe the cable as "cross-over" … is this normal for wired phones?

Have you tried you local Sallys / Op shop ? I just gave them a pile of different phone cords last month.
They may even have a wired phone with appropriate cord for a few bucks.

RJ9, the handset plugs are smaller in all directions compared to line cords that vary in width but stay the same height. Jaycar have a long handset cord ~$10 but a good op shop is well worth a visit.

I donate any gear not worth putting on Trade Me etc to Habitat for Humanity's 'Restore' shop in Pukekohe and there were stuff donated by others there too. I also saw many comms/IT/etc stuff at their Ōtara store as well.

UPDATE:  Got a replacement cord (it is RJ9, thanks @Bung), but problem still exists … even tried cleaning socket with Iso'.

Oddly, when cut out occurs I can hear the person using the phone, but they can't hear me … and the cut out happens when one pulls the cord at a certain angle.  Tried 'jamming' plug in socket to ensure all wires are in contact, but still problem.

The plug is 'sloppy' in the socket, so possibly worn through wear & tear?

Are these sockets replaceable?  Is there a repair service (Wellington)?  Is new phone the answer? (Voluntary organisation with limited funds).

Its probably desoldered from the board at one end. The handset end usually has pins straight on the end of the wire and then pressed into a socket frame.

Something like that isnt worth a technicians time to open and repair so I expect that noone will take it on if you try.

Is it just a standard analogue pushbutton handset you're after?  If so, I dare say that a fellow geekzoner would have a spare one lying around somewhere that they're prepared to part with for not a lot in exchange.  (I would happily donate if I had a spare but a few weeks ago I was actually forced to spend $40 at JB HiFi to buy one for our own household.)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

@richms ... probably right on all counts, but I may try unscrewing the cover plate and looking ... might be an obvious repair (glue/solder).

@floydbloke ... it's not only an answer phone, but the main phone for the office concerned.  They might agree to simply replace it, or I'll give them a loaner to use while I have a look inside it wink, nothing to lose I guess.
