Hi

StarBlazer and family are on the move later in the year (May/June hopefully) and we are struggling to find understandable information on taking our pet dog back to the UK with us.  We went to our vet and they said to look at the MPI website at the OMAR section but that appears to be more geared to "exporting".

Even though NZ is a "rabies free" country, I understand she will still need vaccinations - is this a one-shot vaccine or multiple over a period of time?

Does anyone here have experience in taking their dog to the UK, or even transporting their dog overseas to other countries? If so, what did you need to do? Who did you use?

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

https://www.vetmarlborough.co.nz/Articles++Links/Articles++Links/Articles/Exporting+your+Cat+or+Dog+to+the+UK.html

Which then has a broken hyperlink to

http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/exports/animals/uk-pets-scheme.htm

but I assume information is similar to:

https://www.mpi.govt.nz/exporting/animals/pets/

(I'm guessing you need to meet the export requirements as that's effectively what you're doing? )

Have heard from others that taking pets from country to country often involves a lot of work, heartache and long periods in quarantine, etc. No experience myself though.

EDIT:  This may also be useful https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad

Covers NZ in the approved routes, though it looks like you need to fly Air NZ into Heathrow?

Thanks for the information.  We've contacted a couple of pet carriers for quotes as recommended on a couple of the links.  Will let you know what we find out.

When some friends brought a dog from the UK to NZ it was in quarantine for 6 months or so, I think there is no cooldown time for poets going from NZ to UK. My mum took a cat from NZ to AU and had no quarantine time.

One thing you can look forward to is being able to take your dog to a great many more places, such as the countryside and pubs and public transport....

My advice is try and understand the process and the requirements yourself as much a possible and research the hell out of it and know when you need to do things and what to submit when by. Also keep every shread of paperwork.

We shunted our flotilla of cats (all 8 of them) from AU to NZ with us and a stuff up from the vet meant an additional 2 weeks in boarding before we got them at the expense of the vet practice. The practice manager was a chamption and handled everything but we were still pretty upet. They were all given the wrong flea and tick treament at the 1 month before leaving treatment mark; it had to be a spray and not a spot on so the specific differences can count.
