Hi.

I noticed an opinion piece today published on the the NZ Herald website, which I'd read before.

I did a Google search and found they have now published the same "Opinion" piece 3 times in the past 8 months. Published on 08 Aug 2018, 01 Jan 2019 and again today.

Is republishing such things really necessary in such a short period?

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

Easy content to publish, less effort required to fill their pages.. some would call it lazy..

They don't hire journalists anymore. Just content collectors who can copy/paste.

They had an article recently about how the Harry Potter Cursed Child play was now playing locally.

"Locally" was Melbourne.

70% of their articles seem to be sourced from AU these days, nothing researched.

Over the last 10 years the NZ Herald has gone from being a great newspaper to simply becoming the Daily Mail NZ edition. The vast majority of content is just syndicated clickbait from the Daily Mail or news.com.au which drowns out the content from last few good journalists they have left.

This part is critical - these 'isn't modern media so terrible' threads always slip into huge generalisations that tar the whole of a site's or newspaper's content with the same brush.

I totally agree that the NZH - well, it's website, as the physical paper isn't nearly as bad - has become totally dominated by clickbait cr@p, but the company does have a number of excellent journalists still plugging away producing quality work, as well as a few decent columnists (not looking at MH here, that's for sure!).

That the Herald does such a good job of ensuring this content is hard to find simply feeds the 'it's all rubbish' narrative, so it needs to accept a lot of the responsibility for the loss of its reputation (along with getting rid of so many actual journalists etc...).

Who are people following on social media for decent news these days?

I've gotten rid of stuff and herald because there was just so much garbage, but quite like seeing news item in my feed.

Perception is reality.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
