We have a family event coming up on the weekend that I want to include my sister (UK based) in.

Will be streaming off my Pixel phone, and she's the only one watching. There's good 4G coverage at the site, and she'll be on a standard VDSL connection.

There's obviously plenty of different platforms (Facebook, Google Hangouts, Whatsapp, Skype etc etc) - keen to hear of anyone who's done something similar, and what platform they found to be the best/most stable etc etc

I find WhatsApp great on phones, but it doesn't do desktops. Haven't used it to stream a long event though. Otherwise I guess Skype is easiest.

I saw Paul Brislen bring up to Parliament NZ the irony of using Facebook to live stream the first reading of the gun debate. They added vimeo as an option as well. I think youtube can also do it.

I live streamed a number of children's sports events for the parents that couldn't be there last year.

I used a private group I'd set up and streamed via Facebook.

It worked really well. I had my phone set up on a tripod (using the end/clamp from a selfie stick bought at the Warehouse for $5).

For once, I agree with Talkiet. Nothing beats Youtube. You can make an unlisted video and share the link with whoever you want over whatever platform.

If you are wanting this to be a one-way stream then Youtube is probably the best. If you want it to be two-way then either Skype or Zoom. Skype is getting more annoying with each update though. Zoom free has a time limit of 40 mins per "meeting" if you go beyond two total participants, but if it's just you and one other should be fine.

YouTube requires something like 1000 subscribers for streaming from mobile doesn't it? That's why I resorted to using Facebook for streaming one of our family events.

Ohhhh yes, that changed recently. Sucks. I think there are 3rd party app options but I don't have experience with them.

Ended up using Facebook Live which worked like an absolute champ. Used a lot less data (about 750Mb for the ~hour it was live) than I was expecting.
