In a good old-fashioned nod to traditional family values, Clarke has decided to make an honest woman of Jacinda. Over Easter he proposed and apparently she accepted and now the parents of a young daughter are officially engaged to be married! How touchingly traditional (sort of).

Anyway, best wishes to the happy couple.

Honest?
What, so not participating in an outdated ceremony which makes no difference legally now, made her a liar?

honest woman

An old-school saying referring to the fact that a couple is living in sin until they're married. Once married, the bride would be considered an honest woman.

It's a joke reference to an old-fashioned idiom that has been around for a long time.

hahaha.  The political polls will make a iiar of you.

My better half thought it was a bit early to announce given the time until the election - then realised the prospect of a state wedding.  A political masterstroke!

What annoys me is that she will certainly get a kicker in the polls before and after the wedding - which has nothing to do with how well you can run a country.

Would think it more likely that they elope so they can avoid be accused of doing it for political coin.

I personally favour the weekend of the National Party Annual Conference as being the politically perfect wedding date from the Labour Party point of view.

The reason I titled this thread 'Not Political' is because I didn't want it to become a political discussion and I didn't want to have to place it in the Politics ghetto. I just thought it was interesting that this youngish progressive couple decided to do something so traditional, even if they did leave it a little late. Yet people keep trying to ascribe political motives to it. I have seen suggestions in the past that they timed the baby to win the election. Now some are saying they are cynically timing the marriage for political gain.

For godsake, people, maybe they just wanted to have a baby, and maybe they just wanted to be married. There are an awful lot of right-wing sour grapes here.

I'm not at all saying there are political motives to it - but the effect is unavoidably political. Did you really think this might not become a political discussion? ;)

I can't think of a better alternative to democracy though.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
