Last year I ended up purchasing a TV from a co-woker who got it free with his purchase of an LG G7. After getting the specs from LG (a bit of back and forth) I decided not to replace the existing "dumb" TV and has a result the new TV has been sitting in the hallway for over a year now ..

I am hesitant to list on Facebook and/or Trademe, so I thought about just donating it to the Salvation Army or something similar.

Are there any drawbacks to this thought process - would these places even take a TV?

If its under 32" most places wont touch them these days regardless model etc.

Other option which another forum I'm on does, is put it up for free, but put everyones name into a draw and then do a random draw of a name on a certain date.

You get rid of it, it goes to someone who actually would like it.

List it here, I would be interested. Then donate the cash to the charity if you want to.

If you are in Auckland, could always take it to the City Mission or their store in New Lynn

A word not of caution, but just to be aware of.

With the rise of the community free\buy\sell\swap Facebook pages, in some cases on free things, a person will claim poverty, and go for the sympathy vote, then get the goods\item, and almost immediately post the item for sale on a different group.

The Night Shelter may be worth contacting or Presbyterian support they are always setting up houses for people in Dunedin. I donated to the sallys weekly and they have customers waiting for a call after we drop off has been a good relationship for the last few years. Plenty of choices

I have donated on Freecycle a lot luckily have only once found the item on facebook the day after, the bigger the hard up story id i tend not to believe them.
