Considering purchasing a concert ticket to a concert, pretty much at face value, but better then what is currently available through ticketmaster. I admit to being a bit nervous about buying a ticket that can be printed (multiple times, in theory). Is there any way to protect oneself in this instance?

Turn up super early to ensure you are first through the gate if multiple copies are printed?

Only buy Physical tickets (not e-tickets) off secondary markets?

In reality you will probiably be sweet, especially if you buy from an address verified seller with a decent history on trademe. If you are comfortable sending money to somebodies bank account and waiting for goods to be couriered, the risk is likely similar. The main risk is the seller ripping you off, somebody copying the tickets without their knowledge is a lesser risk.

That said, you will be carrying some risk. If you would be truly devastated to not make it through the gate (say because you are a superfan, or have spend lots of money on plane tickets & hotel rooms in addition to the tickets), then money may be well spent with the official vendor.

If it's also one that is a wee way out, and it's physical tickets that have not been printed sent out yet (purposeful tactic to lower scalping) - they're breaching the T&Cs for selling something they don't have

What rules does Trade Me impose?

One thing we do seek is “proof of goods” - we only allow people to sell tickets they have in their possession so sellers are regularly asked to prove that they have the tickets.

If a seller does not have the ticket, or is unable to provide us proof of that ticket, the listing will be removed and the seller cannot relist the ticket until they can provide us proof that they have it.

Also, where promoters or event organisers show they have cancelled specific tickets (or where personal ID may be required with the ticket itself to gain entry to the event), we will remove them from the site.

Done it a handful of times, yeah I'd only buy from a seller with good feedback for buying and selling stretching back over a long period of time. You can also ask if they'll accept the trademe ping or pay now options which has some extra buyer protections & guarantees from trademe.

Never do it. I made that mistake once and only once.

Bought Fleetwood Mac tickets. The tickets were genuine, but then the concerts were cancelled by the band. Ticketmaster refunded the tickets - but only to the original purchaser and without any requirement for them to surrender the tickets physically.

I raised this as a dispute with TM, who wrote to the seller, who ignored them and did not even correspond.

TM's response in the end was "Yeah, nah, sorry about that."

So the seller got paid twice.

Ever since then, I have either bought direct at the time of sale or just accepted I am not going.
