Āe rā. A week really does little to make a habitual change. Thanks for your response MikeB4.I feel the chiefly language is more mainstream than it was even 10 years ago. I’ve heard Tauiwi a generation younger than me (I’m in my mid 40s) refer to Te Reo Māori as a language from New Zealand and so as a New Zealander they want to learn it. Nice whakaaro.

I agree so much. There are other countries who treat the indigenous like crap. We do too. Maybe if the culture was a daily part of life in NZ, the language we would be more familiar with without having to learn it, we can embrace it. We may get less them and us, and more we. Its just a gentle reminder that NZ started with Maori and then Pakeha. That link should be a bigger part of us. In a few years, it is normal, how it should have been all along

I come from Holland, where much TV is foreign and all of it is subtitled. When I arrived in New Zealand I was amazed to discover that practically nothing here is subtitled. I didn't understand that then and I don't understand it now. It would be a relatively easy and inexpensive way to bring this country's second official language out of the ghetto. Seeing written translations of what you are hearing is a way to learn new words and practice what you already know. It is a way of saying that both languages matter. As a speaker of both Dutch and English, I always enjoyed reading the translations of what I was hearing, especially when the translators made mistakes. I think it is a huge oversight not to do something like that here. It would also be helpful to new immigrants who want to learn both languages, or at least some words.

Agreed. I do this with programmes and movies in Spanish.
