Having been made redundant 4 times in my career, I have to say that this is absolute genius. There's never been a time that I have been able to alter the outcome (and there have been times where I have been able to argue the points and provide solid evidence where an alternative would be more favourable for all).

Once you're at that point, a clown is a great idea. Supportive, can lighten the mood and is a great way to show the company what you think of their process.

I was amused to note that the BBC article on the subject thought a clown a more unusual support person than a pet.

I can just imagine the response to me bringing my German Shorthaired Pointer to such a meeting here, given that dogs are generally regarded as the spawn of Satan in NZ!

Depends how your dog behaves. Your dog will probably detect your real impression of the others at the meeting and might not be as selective about responding. Would having the clown from HR bitten be good or bad?

He had a new job organised before the meeting - he saw the redundancy coming. That’s why he took the clown. The advertising industry is ... different.

My dogs are very well behaved. Why would anyone want the hassle of living with a dog that misbehaved all day? Never understood people who don't train dogs, meself.

I suspect that the HR clown would be fine - unless he was allergic to being licked to death by an enthusiastic dog greeting him..!
