According to the Japan Times "Over 6 million people across Japan were urged to evacuate earlier in the day, with train operators suspending most services and airports shutting down in the metropolitan and surrounding areas."

Its transport and telephones that bother me most. If trains and airports are being shut above then I guess all the roads are going to be chockerblock? Also I know with a power outage, our house would have no internet or landline and rely on keeping our mobiles recharged. So I headed over to the civil defence page on planning for our emergencies and although there was a lot of good abstract frameworks I didnt see anything very practical.
We've always thought "grab the tent and some emergency supplies and head for higher ground" (though we don't keep extra petrol) but I'm wondering if everyone tries to do this at once in cities like Auckland how would this actually pan out?

we have all roads packed during daily morning/evening peak hours and pretty much stand still on eve of long weekends. So I expect an absolute nightmare during mass evacuation.

Better to stay at home.

Having seen the videos of trucks and buildings being literally blown away, I think the idea of going anywhere with a tent is probably not that sensible

Yes. But with a coastal property like ours we might have no choice. I was wondering if there might be a list of schools or community buildings in place, along with some stores of camper beds etc.

There seem to be sites all over the place;

GOOD: www.civildefence.govt.nz/get-ready/get-tsunami-ready/tsunami-evacuation-zones

www.aucklandemergencymanagement.org.nz

getready.govt.nz/prepared/school/whats-the-plan-stan

etc.

So far though I haven't seen any mention of where to go for shelter.

We don't have typhoons. There is no typhoon plan.

Population is less dense, geography is different.

Civil defense will have plans for things like massive earthquakes, Rangitoto, tidal waves.

Local schools, sports stadiums.

I imagine that changes depending on the nature and location of the disaster. CD will have a list of possible places and they'll let you know which ones you can go to if you need to.

Otherwise, bolt a ladder to the outside of the house and stick a rowboat on the roof. When a typhoon hits, climb into the rowboat, pull the cover over and hunker down! You'll be right.

Instead we get cyclones. We are usually fairly lucky and get spared the most powerful damaging ones. But with sea temperatures rising especially in the Tasman sea we may see more making landfall and some coming further south than we have had before.
