This fits under a few categories so I thought best to place here.

What I am trying to do is record the voicemail of a close family friend who has recently passed away as the family want the message to listen to afterwards.

it is off a cellphone, which is currently turned off, so goes directly to the voicemail.

I have a vfx line, which is currently on a asterisk server.

so what I was planning to do is using the bol sip phone on my computer, dial the number, and then plug a stereo lead from the headphones jack of my speakers into the microphone plug of my laptop.

but the issue is that when I call the cellphone, possibly because it is on the vodaphone network, or for some other reason, it doesnt come through clearly.

any ideas?

If this is on a Vodafone mobile, you can forward this message to any number: it will then play the message when the call is answered.
-I suggest enable the VFX voice mail (if not active).
-Record as close to a zero second greeting that you can
-do not disturb
-email copy of voicemail
-call Vodafone voicemail (not sure if you can do on Telecom), then forward the message

Hopefully this will pick up most of the message and email it to you as a wav file

Ah ok, (you can still use Xnet voicemail BTW - above was a temporary step). Ok, suggestion 2:
-Sign up for a 2talk account www.2talk.co.nz
-setup 2talk on asterisk
-configure 2talk setings (live.2talk.co.nz) to record all calls
-add some credit
-call cellphone voicemail via 2talk trunk & listen...
-log back into live.2talk.co.nz and retrieve the recorded phone call

that sounds like it could be an option.

I have jsut given xnet a call, and they are looking into my stats for our line, as Quality Of Service was at 55% and jitter was at 34.3ms which means that a steady stream of data isnt able to be made. which is the problem with the vfx line at the moment.

Hopefully in 20 minutes when they call back they will have a solution to that problem.

and then I can just a 3.5mm stereo lead from the headphone port to the microphone port on my laptop, and record it that way.

Oh, and the other option of course is, setup Asterisk to record phone calls - I'm guessing you have tried this, but we sometime forget the simple things :)

Great!

As for voice Codecs: in your VFX trunk settings, remove G729, leaving just ulaw & alaw. This may help voice quality, but if it's your DSL that is at fault, then you will need to fix this too.

If you need more help, please create a new topic in appropriate forum (WxC or broadband or VoIP)
