They remain on the 2 floors under it, stopping it coming down while it burns out all the fuel (concrete, steel and the sealant tends to indicate it's likely fixable) between the void and make-safe

Kinda like a fire break in trees to allow a gap to access

Guessing this is going to delay it even further....

Steel and fire are not a good mix, I hope it doesn't pancake  from the roof and floors above falling onto the floors below it if any steel fixings fail.

The one thing that really had me puzzled is, why did they do the Public safety alarm so late. it just seemed a bit silly by the time it was actually activated..

There are different types of membrane type roofing. Some only require a glue under a rubber membrane, (often used on low pitch houses as well), which is what they used on the Christchurch town hall and lasted many decades.

'Cos, I mean, if you're in the CBD you would've already have noticed that something was up! Kinda pointless by that point to send a message saying "Hey, there's a fire and it's smokey outside and the traffic is really bad, so uhh just fyi"

Notice however that when he lets off the trigger, there is still flame coming out of the torch. Perhaps the dude thought that flame was extinguished or he was distracted by something and put it down when it was still quietly flaming away?

the Notification was sent at 6.41pm. while the event started about 1ish?

i feel that's a little late for a public safety message?

Nothing against the message itself, it was all saying the right things, warning of smoke inhalation etc. 

tardtasticx: Oof, would not want to be the guy who left that blowtorch going (if that story is to be believed anyway, I imagine it could have started from a huge number of things on a construction site).

While a blowtorch may have been the cause, the real cause was the lack of a fire extinguisher. There would have to be an OSH rule about using an open flame on an inflammable item on a construction site, to have an extinguisher handy. Its like many air crashes, the direct cause is ok as there are processes to capture it, but when that fails.....

Overnight, the fire continued to burn through the roof.

There are currently 26 appliances working to fight the fire.

People are reminded to stay away from the immediate area.
